Note: as with the other Lists, “DL” stands for Dead Link, also sometimes called a Broken Link. The date next to the “DL” shows roughly when it was discovered that the link was dead. These lists were started in 2006, so, that’s why they’re updated from time to time.

I. Discussion Groups and Forums. (note: in the 21st century, these have largely been replaced by “blog” sites. The use of the terms “blog”, “blogsite”, etc., have become so common that they are now used without the quotes.) May 2014 Update: a few “social media”-type sites have been added, which are similar to blogs, groups, or forums.

It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.
http://etherpad.org/    }Etherpad (previously known as EtherPad)[1][2] is a web-based collaborative real-time editor, allowing authors to simultaneously edit a text document, and see all of the participants' edits in real-time, with the ability to display each author's text in their own color. There is also a chat box in the sidebar to allow meta communication. Anyone can create a new collaborative document, known as a "pad". Each pad has its own URL, and anyone who knows this URL can edit the pad and participate in the associated chats. Password-protected pads are also possible. Each participant is identified by a color and a name. The software
auto-saves the document at regular, short intervals, but participants can permanently save specific versions (checkpoints) at any time. Merging of changes is handled by operational transform. A "time slider" feature allows anyone to explore the history of the pad. The document can be downloaded in plain text, HTML, Open Document, Microsoft Word, or PDF format.
http://ezinemark.com/a/deciding-between-usenet-and-discussion-groups/    }the full collection of article and videos from EzineMark about Usenet (newsgroups) and (Web-based) discussion groups.
www.facebook.com   }although we normally don’t include “social networking” sites on our Lists, since this one is the largest one in the world, we can’t leave it out. The point here, is that you will find many forums and discussion groups on facebook, but, the facebook search itself is not very good. People often complain about that. Therefore, you will want to use the search tools on this page to find the forum or discussion group that you want there.
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index   }the Free Republic forums. FreeRepublic, LLC, PO Box 9771, Fresno, Ca, 93794.  FreeRepublic.com is powered by software copyright 2000-2008 John Robinson. 328 links on that first page. Page is current (26oct15).

https://github.com/ether/etherpad-lite    }Etherpad Lite up 'n' running in 5 minutes. Etherpad Lite is a lightweight version of (probably) the most popular web-based collaborative real-time editor - Etherpad. This great peace of software allows multiple users to
edit the same document in real-time. To make collaboration easier, users have built-in chat at their disposal. History playback, infinite undo, easy import and export of documents are some of the cool stuff it has to offer. Compared to the original, EL has very short system requirements list, which makes it very easy to deploy. Since it's written in server-side JavaScript using Node.js, to make it functional for testing/development purposes you'll need only Node.js, but for everyday/production usage it's recommended that you use a web server (e.g. Apache or Nginx) and MySQL.
https://gobby.github.io/    }Gobby is a collaborative editor supporting multiple documents in one session and a multi-user chat.
It is developed in GitHub, and instructions to download and getting started as well as other documentation is available on the Wiki.
On this page, a rough overview of where the most commonly accessed resources of Gobby are is given, along with news concerning the project. Gobby is a free software collaborative real-time editor available on Windows and Unix-like platforms. (It runs on Mac OS X using Apple's X11.app.) It was initially released in June 2005 by the 0x539 dev group.[3] (The hexadecimal value 0x539 is equal to 1337 in decimal.) Gobby uses GTK+ for its GUI widgets. It features a client-server architecture which supports multiple documents in
one session, document synchronisation on request, password protection and an IRC-like chat for communication out of band. Users can choose a colour to highlight the text they have written in a document. Gobby is fully Unicode-aware, provides syntax highlighting for most programming languages and has basic Zeroconf support.
http://www.googleguide.com/groups.html   }We don’t like to include google links, but, this is their guide to Discussion Forums Online. any of the Google Groups are part of Usenet. Usenet newsgroups (forums) are grouped into several large areas, each of which is broken into subareas.
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?lnk=od&   }this is the directory of google groups, which are also somewhat similar to discussion groups. Owing to google’s terrifying size and frightening purchasing power and influence, they have a complete list of Usenet links, some of which undoubtedly go to old-style, bona fide discussion groups. The link for that is http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=gtype%3D0   }the few links that we tested all worked, but some of the groups had 0 subscribers. We still avoid google products on our Lists (JKU), and recommend that you do the same, most especially their search engine.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!browse    }directory of google groups by region and category.

Groups in these categories: Business & Finance, Computers & Internet, Cultures & Community, Entertainment & Arts, Family & Home, Games, Government & Politics, Health & Wellness, Hobbies & Crafts, Music, Recreation & Sports, Regional, Religion & Beliefs, Romance & Relationships, Schools & Education, Science. 109 links on the page.

II. Metacrawlers and engines not listed in other categories-
http://addon.100searchengines.com/texis/open/search?q=l   }the 100 search engines, links page. Links to all the popular news sites and other popular sites. This is also the search page. Recommended.
http://7dmqbxohw4mgbnaw.onion/   }The Hidden Wiki. Site up as of May, 2015, but, most of the sites with domains .onion and .tor2web , are down or gone; those are dead links (DLs). Tor is mostly DLs now (May 2015).
www.albany.net/allinone   }120 categorized, customized searching.  DL 10/9/10
http://www.allplus.com/   }this is the AllPlus Meta Search and Discovery Engine which is based on PolyMeta (below), and it failed every search test, including the easy ones.
www.beaucoup.com   }1200 categorized search utilities.
http://www.allplus.com/   }supposed to be a Superior new search engine, we were very disappointed, it did poorly in our easy search tests.
www.cyber411.com   }16 engines, eliminates duplicates. DL 2011
http://deeperweb.com/    }this is one of the best new search engines, that we’ve seen for years. But it isn’t new; it is a major improvement of google!  This is then a metasearch engine with “deeper web” results, as well as a “deep web” tag cloud, metrics, news results, wiki-results, blogs, and so on. Highly Recommended, and did very well in our easy and hard search tests.
http://www.etools.ch/searchInfo.do   }”The metasearch engine eTools.ch has no own index or database – instead the information is retrieved from several data sources in parallel (federated search, search several search engines at once). A data source can be, among others, a traditional web search engine, a web service or a database.  eTools.ch is fast, as fast as the slowest data source that currently is queried by eTools.ch. Therefore the search settings let you limit the maximum time to wait for a query (by default 2 seconds). If a data source does not respond anymore reliably, eTools.ch will automatically disable it temporary. As soon as the data source is available again, it will be automatically re-enabled. “  This is a relatively unknown Swiss search engine. Highly Recommended. Uses the non-google search engines well, and gives fast and relevant results. What we liked best though, are the humourous quotes at the top of the page. Here’s a sample: "There are three reasons why lawyers are replacing rats as laboratory research animals. One is that they are plentiful, another is that lab assistants don't get so attached to them, and the third is that they will do things that you just can't get rats to do." -Blanche Knott-
http://fazzle.com/index.html   }fazzle was a metasearch engine, and performed quite well. It is done now, but the page is still there, and the author says that the search engine is undergoing reconstruction (2015).
http://www.findsmarter.com/   }a newer metasearch engine which did well in our tests. This engine allow you to group results by their “extension” or domain type. It is clean and easy to read, fast, and gave even images for a hard test (i.e. an abstract term), most engines fail that sort of test. Highly Recommended; we found only one flaw: when you select the “Knowledge” tab, it gives results, but won’t let you click to the site; you have to copy the URL and paste it into the address bar yourself.
http://www.fireball.de/    }we Recommend this fast German search engine, it did well in our tests.
http://www.freeality.com/meta.htm   }may duplicate other sites or crawlers.
https://encrypted.google.com/   }image search, but tagged for reuse with modification.
http://lookahead.surfwax.com/index-2011.html   }This engine is useful for finding recent news articles online. That is the kind of results it returns for any search-term.. A better than average set of search engines. Surfwax is older than google, and uses unique search methods. Can mix with educational, US Govt tools, and news sources, or many other categories. Also,
http://lookahead.surfwax.com/   }from this page you can link directly to search-engine watch, the resource shelf, and master news media, which has an explanation of surfwax, and its history, interview with the designer.
http://www.megasearches.com/default.php   }another newer (2015) meta-search engine. Did well in our tests; and was fast. You can search by top-level domains or extensions and can save your search history. The search page is customizable easily using their pre-set choices. You can also specify which search engines you want it to check first. Recommended. We’re still testing this one but Recommend it. The default “metasearch” tab uses google-custom-search.
www.metacrawler.com   }highly customizable. Competitive with the better known ones.  Metacrawler is one of the oldest meta-search engines on the web, but still worth it, or adding to a group of search engines, such as in your browser, if you use one. 2015 Update:  MetaCrawler also provided users the option to search for images, video, news, yellow pages and white pages. In the late 90's  talk show host Conan O'Brien on TRL used the verb "metacrawled". It used to provide the option to search for audio. MetaCrawler is now a registered trademark of InfoSpace, Inc., and redirects to http://zoo.com/ .
https://www.metascroll.com/search    }a newer metasearch engine. Fast, and novel results; customizable, but not colors or background. Recommended.
http://managedq.com/index.php   }this is a new engine which organizes google results and presents them in novel ways. Perhaps the creators think it is easier or better to use; we found the layout and usage to non-obvious and perhaps counter-intuitive; but it is fast, and gives a visual presentation of results which is unlike any  other engine. Their “about” says that they may feature other engines besides google in the future. Today is 16feb15. We’re Recommending this for now; and it has plugins for Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.
http://grizzlykijswtj2x.onion/   }New Tor/onion search engine. Currently needs javascript to work, will soon make a non-JS version. DL 2015.
http://hpuuigeld2cz2fd3.onion/    }Another Tor/onion search engine. DL 2015. Onion.to is temporarily not available. We are looking forward to relaunch this
service soon. We are looking for hosting providers that donate resources in the form of servers and bandwidth. Please contact us if you have an offer to make! admin at this domain
https://hzovy5vy36hrbxqv.tor2web.fi/    }Getting started: Whenever you see a URL like http://duskgytldkxiuqc6.onion/, that's a Tor hidden Web service. Just replace .onion with .tor2web.org to use the Tor2web proxy network. Example: https://duskgytldkxiuqc6.tor2web.org/ . This connects you with Tor2web, which then talks to the hidden service via Tor and relays the response back to you.
http://xmh57jrzrnw6insl.onion/   }Tor Search Engine. Claims to index around 1.1 Million pages. DL 2015. Onion.to is temporarily not available. We are looking forward to relaunch this service soon. We are looking for hosting providers that donate resources in the form of servers and bandwidth. Please contact us if you have an offer to make! admin at this domain
http://oqznfi3tdo6nwg3f.onion    }Tor network search - Torgle v3.  DL 2015. onion.to is temporarily not available. “We are looking forward to relaunch this service soon. We are looking for hosting providers that donate resources in the form of servers and bandwidth. Please contact us admin at this domain if you have an offer to make! “
http://most-popular.org/   }shows the most popular websites in the world; also gives the ranking and statistics for URLs you specify. Easy to read and use. However, they rank more than websites:  “When you ask, "What is the most popular" anything, our system provides you with the answer! Our network of sites are all part of the very special "Most Popular" project where we do our best to organize all types of data according to how popular something is. We rank things like books, blogs, games, movies, news stories, songs, videos, websites and more and we make all of this information available to you on one of our specialty sites that focus on particular subjects. Our data comes from real world statistical information available from various sources we collect and process 24 hours a day. “. In one test, we checked polymeta.com (next URL), and found that it is the 1,212,859 th most popular website as of 18apr15.
http://www.online-utility.org/search/index.jsp   }Search Best Websites according to Wikipedia. This custom special search engine searches 4000 best websites according to number of backlinks from Wikipedia. Among websites it searches are Wikipedia, New York Times, BBC, MySpace, Guardian, Yahoo! groups, Amazon, Washington Post, The Internet Movie Database, ODP - Open Directory Project, Gutenberg Project, Flickr - Photo Sharing, Time Magazine, Encyclopedia Britannica, UEFA, FIFA, FIBA, etc. Please email us your suggestions which websites we should include in specific search engine.
http://www.polymeta.com/   }a new meta-search engine, but one that did poorly in our tests. This is described as The Best and Awesome and so on, we wer disappointed. Made by http://weblib.com/ , and they say “PolyMeta is an advanced Web 2.0 meta-search (federated search) and clustering engine. PolyMeta enables organizations and individuals to simultaneously search diverse information resources on the Web with a common interface. The search results are merged, ranked and presented in relevance order. PolyMeta employs powerful Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval algorithms in its query analysis and refinement, search strategy, relevancy ranking, focused drill-down and exploration of multi-dimensional information spaces. Try out AllPlus Meta Search and Discovery Engine what is based on PolyMeta, to see what we are capable of !“ See also the notation for that engine. 2015 Update: The Polymeta search engine was apparently not working correctly during the days we tested it. Now, it is working. For results, it favors Wikipedia heavily; but on the other hand, it does have the novelty of being the first and only search engine which lets you FB “like” a website in the search results. That is, each search result has a FB “like” button in it. Also, the more we have used this the more we like it: Recommended.
www.surfy.com   }40 engines. This crawler is still up, but it also has links for travel, resorts, and hotels, and appears to be used for just that by some users.
www.savvy.com   } assembles results. DL 2011.
http://search.yahoo.com/   }we were almost saddened to see that Yahoo Search is now “powered by” bing. We were researching the Yahoo! Livesearch feature which is similar to Surfwax’s Look-ahead feature, when we found the news. Read their page in Wikipedia here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Webmaster_Center    }more details on how Bing incorporated Yahoo search features.
http://www.wikiwax.com/   }search Wikipedia using surfwax look-ahead “technology”.  In our easy test, it returned no results, and no feedback of any kind.
http://zw3crggtadila2sg.onion/torgle/   }Torgle revived. Based on OnionWare’s server. Web crawler.

III. Search Engines. (See Engines also in Academic Research List http://sdrv.ms/R4hwOv  & Online Tools List http://bit.ly/wkep6I )
A. Current sites:
http://www.13kg.com/power/   }search engine link site and portal. Enter your search term, and it returns one-click links to 89 (eighty-nine) search engines, each of which opens searching for your term (and there are “200” more engines in the pull-down menu).  Since we didn’t test all of them with our usual test terms, easy, middle, and hard, instead we tested unlikely engines just for fun. For example, we looked for the meaning of a word on the CDC (Centers For Disease Control) search engine, instead of an online dictionary.
3g2upl4pq6kufc4m.onion    }DuckDuckGo, on Tor.
http://addictomatic.com/   }Addictomatic searches the best live sites on the web for the latest news, blog posts, videos and images. It's the perfect tool to keep up with the hottest topics, perform ego searches and feed your addiction for what's up, what's now or “what other people are feeding on”.
https://ahmia.fi/search/    }This is a search engine for hidden onion sites running inside Tor network. Use Tor Browser Bundle to access hidden services. Add new sites. HS crawling info. Inform us about CP and we will filter it.  Hidden Websites statistics: 3314 online / 24 filtered.
https://ahmia.fi/search/?q=Onion%20Site%20Reviews   }Tor search for website reviews on the Tor network. 95 results on this page. Note that the tor2web portal is down, the Hidden Wiki and its mirrors are down, and that most of the links on the network are DLs. Especially, most of the .onion and .tor2web domain websites are DLs.
http://www.alhea.com/    }searching google and yahoo, and saying “web for everyone !” on the front page/ search bar page. Takes a moment to load the page, but it well in our tests.
http://www.ant.com/    }We found out about Ant doing image searches; it came with a freeware video editor that Julie Éclair told us about. Now, good engines like Ixquick or even google will do site searches, but, we found our result immediately with Ant.  Best way to use Ant : go to the site, then click the little molecule symbol on your Ant toolbar. A page with info about the site appears, and you can search the site from there.
http://www.baidu.com/   }this is the main Chinese search engine, and it is somewhat new. However, it uses methods and protocols that are different from the ones that have, sometimes by agreement, and sometimes from usage, become accepted and somewhat standardized by all the world’s other search engines. Google has difficult translating its pages, for example; and translated pages no longer show the images (in the case of images) and so on. It is therefore difficult to use. We haven’t tried other website/page translators with , since their results are usually similar to google’s. (We often use images to test engines since it gives us a consistent test, making comparison of engine results easier. We also use difficult terms for our “hard” search test.) The good news: Baidu usually gives results that no others find, especially with images! Even better than Yandex (see below) for this.
www.bing.com    }from Microsoft. Bing is competitive with basically all the other search engines listed here; we haven’t tested it very much, since we don’t find it interesting. It is also basically redundant to all the other engines. Of course, all alternatives to google are good; but this is Microsoft. The concept here is, once again, to not use the giants, that strangle the market, thereby preventing innovation and progress. 2104 Update: Bing videos is user-unfriendly. It is awkward and difficult to find, view, link to videos from the bing results page. We also dislike the way the images are displayed in the results. We recommend that you use a different search engine for videos and images/
http://blekko.com/   }a new site, still in its beta-version. In our tests it was most impressive, and a very satisfying search engine. Got new sites instantly, and so on. Has a new, quicker style on image searches as well.  May 2014 Update: We have found that Blekko’s format for images and videos is very inconvenient to use. To serve mobile device users, they have ruined their search engine for videos and images. Their format is very similar to Bing’s. 2015 Update: Blekko has been acquired by IBM Watson and is no longer a search engine.
http://browse.lt/   }a new site. This site did well in our video tests. It gives results for you tube, daily motion, vimeo, and metacafe, on 4 tabs of one page. Fast, easy to see and use, a simple search engine. For news, you have Delfi, Alfa, BBC, CNN, and RIA Novsoti, as tabs all on one page. We like it; it’s difficult to find information about it. For now, we Recommend it. Returns results in their native language sometime, not in English; search page has buttons for Lithuanian, English, and Russian. It also did well in our search term test. This is based in Lithuania, and we’ve never heard of it before. We have not been able to learn if it is a meta-search engine or meta-crawler or not; but sometimes the results look a little like google, so we are still researching this new engine. Definitely an HQ search engine.
http://www.chacha.com/    }ChaCha is a human based search engine. It provides free, real time answers to any question through it's website, via test messaging, or by using one of the company's mobile apps. The company was founded in 2006 by Scott A Jones and Brad Bostic. Many people use text to access ChaCha. Their text number is 242242. Their landline number is ++1-800-2242242.
http://find.copernic.com/   }Copernic (presumably pronounced like Copernicus, without the “us”) metasearch engine. Did poorly in our test for images, but Ok on general web search. This metasearch engine is overrated on some websites. We find that, e.g., Ixquick, Yippy! (formerly Clusty(formerly Vivisimo)), and Dogpile all did as well as Copernic in out tests… and sometimes better. Their desktop search app (see below), though, is unique and useful. It has some advantages over Cubic Explorer, see also our Online Tools 2015 List (http://sdrv.ms/wkep6I ). Cubic Explorer has some advantages over the Copernic Desktop Search; they’re rather different from each other. But we were disappointed by their metasearch engine. See next. 2015 Update: Copernic has been improved, and now finds results that other engines including google don’t find (usually evaluated by what they show on the first or second page). It is similar to European engines, and is based in Canada. Finds entries in French and English. We Recommend it now.
http://www.copernic.com/en/products/agent/personal.html   } Their desktop personal search agent was impressive. It runs from the desktop and queries 10 or more search engines at a time! We recommend it. Yes, we use it ourselves, and we do use the Copernic desktop search (http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/ ) as well. Both have lots of the features you’d want and expect. But the desktop search can search your computer, the web, or both at the same time, for the info you’re looking for. The desktop search will index, as you specify, your hard drive, removable media, and so on. The personal search agent only has one major flaw: it can’t display any images, at all, no matter how you tweak it. This includes for image searches, for which it uses nine different image search engines. It would be Highly Recommended by us, except for that serious flaw.

www.dogpile.com    }from Infoseek, Dogpile is not the giant that it once was.  Dogpile has suffered from the aggressive efforts of Microsoft (via MSN and Bing) and google to make big-bidness and other moves to limit Infoseek’s successes. However, Infospace/Infoseek is still big in the metasearch market, according to recent (2012) search engine review sites. Searched Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.com (as of 6/15/10). Sites that have purchased ranking and inclusion are mixed into the results. Watch for "Sponsored:".   2015 Update: Dogpile pages take “a long time” to load, less than 1 minute but far more than a few seconds. Is Dogpile or Infospace dying? We found that the original infospace search engine page didn’t work anymore.
http://duckduckgo.com/   }this is a fun new search engine, and we think that you’ll enjoy it. You can customize the search in many ways, check out those features. Their appearance, results, etc., are more customizable than other engines. Found difficult terms’ results that some others (on this page) did not. Best for technical searches. To find images with DDG, use the (so-called) “slashtag”  /images. We have not yet tested the /videos “slashtag” on DDG. DDG is also on Tor now: http://3g2upl4pq6kufc4m.onion/   }DDG on the Tor network.
https://duckduckgo.com/bang#   }all the DDG bangs.  Their ! (“bang”) collection is impressive. More links than on this List, or perhaps any of our Lists; but, of course, only a small fraction of the 8000+ links on all the Lists.
https://duckduckgo.com/settings   }save settings to the clouds or load from there. Jae likes very dark grey with bright lime green;  I like burgundy background with neon blue letters.
http://enigma.io/    }engine searches the worlds’s public records databases, for free. You can selected “U.S. only” instead or “world”. Use the “open platform” here: http://enigma.io/publicdata/    }It unifies billions of records from thousands of government sources to make the world of public data universally accessible and useful. Free search account requested: an e-mail link. Search results: returned are many records from many national or global records databases; it is really too much information. However, this is the only engine that will give you business and government public records for free. Highly Recommended.
http://www.exalead.com/search/   }web search URL, allows partial word, wildcards, and “sounds like” searches. See also notes on Exalead below.
http://suche.freenet.de/   }this german search is new to us. We gave it a fairly easy test, and then tested it for images. We often search for the very same type of image with each search engine, so that at least one test is the same for each image search engine. Suche did very well. Recommended.
http://gibiru.com/   }uncensored anonymous search.  It is “powered by” google custom search, and a few others here are as well. (We now include google sites and engines, and don’t reject them as we did in the past issues of JKU.) They say this on the search page (edited): “Founded in 2009 by Internet Privacy advocats, Gibiru is the preferred Search Engine for Patriots. Gibiru is faster than the NSA Search Engines since it does
not install all sorts of personalization and tracking cookies on your system. Gibiru provides Uncensored and Unpersonalized Anonymous Web and News Results.Gibiru is Not partnered with the NSA so you can Browse  the Internet safely the way the Constitution would have intended. “ We found the site clean and the search relatively fast and easy to use. It also has links to “surveillance reports” and “anonymous news”. They also offer free plugins for Firefox users, 128 bit encryption and so on.  Here also is:
https://anonymous-gibiru.com/   }their secure (https), uncensored anonymous search.
http://www.gigablast.com/   }powered by clean energy, so-called “green” search engine, and the only one that we know of on the Web. This is a good engine for alternative leads and URLs, but weak when compared to, say, ISeek or Ixquick. Failed the hard search term test. Gigablast is one of the remaining four search engines in the United States that maintains its own searchable index of over a billion pages. It is scalable to thousands of servers. Has scaled to over 12 billion web pages on over 200 servers. It supports Distributed web crawler, Document conversion, Automated data corruption detection and repair, Can cluster results from same site, Synonym search, Spell checker and lot more. On GitHub: https://github.com/gigablast   }and
http://googlewebsitesearch.com/gw-search-tools/   }Google Website Search is Not affiliated with Google Inc. We won’t attempt to do an exhaustive study of Google search engines but we’re trying to come pretty darn close. We will shed light on Google’s arsenal of search engines large or small that are readily available for anyone to use today.
http://guigoog.com/index.html?q=&cx=partner-pub-0768117446212054:z8dgu5-yk7b&ie=UTF-8&cof=FORID:9#    }a newer search engine. Called ‘the iconic search tool’, this engine shows icons for various searching choices, such as websites, and you can search by date range, suggestions, filetypes, or location, as well. Related terms appear as you type, somewhat similar to Netspeak. Recommended.
http://www.hakia.com/   }this is a semantic search engine, and it functions well as one. The results supplied are text samples from the located pages, and it separates results into web, blog, video, etc. However, it failed to find a difficult result in our tests, one that Yippy easily found at once. But it did find a similar result, the same one that Blekko did. Failed the hard search term test. May 2014 Update: Hakia appears to be dying, and semantic search engines, are becoming extinct. We are unhappy about this. There is only one other good semantic search engine that still works, and that is I-Seek (reviewed on this list). 2015 Update: Replacement: http://www.netspeak.org/# }this engine doesn't give exactly the same results as Hakia, and doesn't say that it is a Semantic Search Engine, but it did well in our tests and finds occurrences of words and word groups in text, in the same way that Hakia did. Let us know if this site works for you.
http://iboogie.com/  }another newer search engine and also a clustering search engine. Since the demise of Yippy, the old and new clustering engines are popular again (2015). Our favorite is ISeek.com, and PolyMeta also clusters results, but not in the same way as iboogie.com or iseek.com. This site successfully passed our search tests.
http://www.lexxe.com/index.html   }a third generation Internet search engine with advanced Natural Language Processing technology. Lexxe is based in Sydney, Australia. "Lexxe", /leksI/ or pronounced 'leksi', our company name, is derived from a linguistic term "Lexical", which means "related to words".  Lexxe’s search technology is built upon the foundation of advanced Natural Language technology. Did fairly in out tests; Lexxe has older information but not new info; other search engines, such as PolyMeta, tend to have newer info but little or no older info. This is useful to researchers, who, like everyone else, want the search result which they are are looking for to be on the first page. Lexxe may not be maintained any more; see also Dogpile and Infospace on this List. So, we’d use Lexxe to see non-new results first, and a newer engine to see new results first.
http://liszen.com/   } Find library blogs and other library resources with this engine.
http://www.nowrelevant.com/nrbeta/   }another new site, this one is still in its beta version. It claims to search 55,000,000 for recent news about your subject. You adjust a slider for how many days back you want it to search over, up to 14 days. Unfortunately, in our tests, it just said “searching”, and never actually returned any results, at all.
http://www.opensearch.org/Community/OpenSearch_search_engine_directories    }this is the list of sites that contain lists of search engines that support Open Search. To understand what Open Search is, if you’re not a search-application professional, you must read their FAQs at http://www.opensearch.org/Documentation/Frequently_asked_questions   }they have some interesting links with the Wikis, too. Read about that here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki     }links for FAQs, etc. here; a free software open source wiki package written in PHP, originally for use on Wikipedia. It is now also used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis, including this website, the home of MediaWiki. Use the links below to explore the site contents. You'll find some content translated into other languages, but the primary documentation language is English.
https://www.qwant.com/   }Qwant is an EU-based search engine launched on February 16, 2013, as a beta version. A final version was released on July 4, 2013. Qwant offers several types of results including conventional websites, online stores, news websites and social networks. According to its founder, Qwant does not want to compete with Google but "to show something different". In Search mode, the results are organized in columns: Web, News, Qnowledge Graph (displayed only if there is an article on Wikipedia), Social, Shopping. It is possible to refine the search for each column by typing another keyword. The "Media" mode is for photos and videos; while the "People" mode if for finding people or organizations on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and Myspace. Users can create a free account allowing them to create notebooks and notes.
http://scour.com/index.html   }another one of the newer sites (January 2104). If you find this from another search engine you’ll arrive at the sign-up/sign-in page; this link takes you to the search bar. Polls yahoo, bing/msn, and google, and then weighs the results against their users’ feedback about them. In our hard test, ‘web’ category, it did better than expected. Their results also have a “open in new window” button similar to Yippy’s. In our hard ‘images’ test, the results were very disappointing. Ixquick, Info, and Mamma all returned better results in the same test. Google’s results are inferior for the opposite reason: they return too many results, not just in images, but in all categories. We assume that most users are like us, and don’t have all day to search through a huge pile of google results. February 2014 Update: Scour has received some good ratings and reviews, but we found it to be average, not bad, but not so good either. A good alternative to the other metasearches, maybe, but we prefer the ones that search more than merely bing, google, yahoo. Dogpile searches Yandex now, for example, and can return different results than the other three do. Does well on image searches, and shows some links that the other engines or metasearch engines don’t. Medium size thumbs with frames, caption, URL, but no dimensions, those are very important for image searches. Recommended otherwise. Appears to be made for mobile device users.
http://www.secretsearchenginelabs.com/   }their beta version, we’re still testing it. On our hard test, they missed the mark, but that’s why it’s a hard test. Their “about” page at http://www.secretsearchenginelabs.com/about.php   }tells us that  “We are a search engine giving you the less popular search results often omitted by mainstream search giants. Our long term goal is to become the best search engine on the Internet for traditional web search.” This site would be recommended, but the results page shows many ads. Several search engines today group sponsored results with the search results, but SSE sometimes shows only sponsored “results”, ads. Failed the hard search term test. 2014 Update:  We re-checked this site today. We were one of his first customers, so to speak, and contributed URLs to his directory. This is an experimental search engine, made by a single Finnish computer scientist from Finland. Now, it returns many results, and not just all ads as before, and not dominated by foreign websites in foreign languages, etc. as before. Did well in our easy term test, and we found at least one site both useful and interesting from them. Recommended for an experimental search engine. 2015 Update: needs to crawl more sites.
http://searchalta.com/new/   }a newer engine; it seems to not be altavista. Site did well in our easy and hard search tests. The image and video results were somewhat disappointing; but the site has features that other engines lack, features you look for and are pleased to find, such as selecting what file type you want the results to be. For that, we Recommend this one.  Also, no color options in the options/preferences; your only choice is white screen, black ink. Still, we Recommend this engine.
http://www.surfok.de/   }this engine is new to us. It is from Germany, and most of it is in German. In out tests, it found sites that the American search engines did not. It is clean and easy to use, Recommended. Several quick link buttons on the main page.
http://www.webfetch.com/   }2015 Update:  redirects to  http://msxml.excite.com/ , which did rather poorly in our tests. See instead Startpage or Zoo.
http://www.wolframalpha.com/   }2015 Update: this engine has also been improved. It did well in our hard and easy tests, and, we can Recommend it now.
http://www.wotbox.com   }Wotbox is independent Search Engine that has been in development since October 2002 and live since July 2003. After lying dormant for many years the Wotbox bots came back to life again in the summer of 2012. After many months of development resulted in a brand new index launched in the summer of 2013. This one did well in our tests; Recommended. WOT is an acronym that means, Web Of Trust. http://www.xmarks.com/    }For finding similar sites culled from our database of over 800 million bookmarks.Features Overview, what the Xmarks add-on and website can do for you.  Install Xmarks on each computer you use, and it seamlessly integrates with your web browser and keeps your bookmarks safely backed up and in sync. http://narod.yandex.ru   }the famous Russian search engine. Translating the pages makes them easier to read. Finds URLs that the others don’t, sometimes. This was the only search engine besides Curry Guide to find three results in our hard search term test!
http://yubnub.org/   }”a treasury of user-submitted shortcuts that enable you to search the Web more quickly and efficiently.  YubNub is officially a "social command line for the Web", which basically means that you can create your own shortcuts for pretty much anything you've been able to search for on the Web, from a simple site search to much more complex commands. Personally, I use YubNub to execute Web searches that I find myself doing over and over and over again, such as: abws: This searches the About Web Search site for anything; i.e., "abws search engines." deli: Searches del.icio.us,one of my favorite social bookmarking sites on the Web. digg: Searches Digg, a popular user-driven site that votes stories up or down depending on content.” We found yubnub to be unnecessary. Several of the commands are duplicative, most try to speed up using google URL, apis, or searches; but those are already quite fast: how long would it take to type or text gmail.com ?  2 seconds, 3 seconds?”   What does the word “yubnub” mean? “remember hearing this word as a kid, watching one of the Star Wars movies. Evidently it means "Hooray" in the Ewok language. “
http://zuula.com   }provides the results from your favorite search engine unaltered, so you can check those first and then get results from other search engines simply by clicking on their tabs. If you want to switch back and forth between search engines, Zuula remembers where you were. And Zuula keeps sponsored links (which are paid advertisements) clearly separated from the regular search results. However, this search result aggregator was disappointing in our easy tests. It returned results from google only, and for the other tabbed search engines, said that they were loading too slowly, or a similar disappointing message. For example, Bing; and Yahoo. We liked the tabs idea a lot; but in our tests, big engines like Yahoo and Bing were too slow, causing zuula to return no results. Google worked, and Ol’ Gigablast, too. Recommended.
http://www.zoo.com/   }More colorful looking, slick design, probably made for mobile device users. Their image search is still good, same as Webfetch; these are small enough, with a frame around each result and the dimension of the image, and the URL. Recommended. The web search results are very slow, but the site may be receiving heavy usage. The image search results were faster in our easy test. Web results were relevant and easy to read and use. Overall, at least as good as their other engines, such as Webfetch and Dogpile.  All the Infospace engines together are Highly Recommended as the best alternative to the dominant three search engines today. In our hard search term tests, it did well on the first one, but failed to find the second one. Both were normal English language words. Wikitionary had the second hard search term. “Zoo has been created to give you the best search results available on the Web, alongside some new features to make your search experience even more rewarding. Zoo gives you the best results by searching all the most popular engines and retrieving the best combined results; allows you to search multiple leading search engines at once, returning more comprehensive and relevant results, fast. 2015 Update: Zoo did poorly in normal usage recently; we can no longer Recommend it.

B. Older sites:

Clean results, shows source, but crowded with sponsored links above and below results. In our easy search test, returned results comparable to Yippy, but fewer of them.
http://botw.org/   }Best of the Web Directory, since 1994. Internet’s oldest directory. Failed the hard search term test, did well in the others.. BOTW is a human edited directory. They will decline your listing if they don't like the site. A submission is $150 annually or $300 for a permanent listing. Recommended.

Congoo News is the most comprehensive news source on the Web aggregating stories from over 25,000 free and subscription content sources. Congoo’s technology organizes articles into stories and stories into subjects; Congoo is a free real-time news, networking and information portal. Recommended that you use other search engines.
www.curryguide.com   }this is the URL for their new website, which is still under development. Their old engine can be found at http://web.curryguide.com/   }based in the UK, curry guide is one of the oldest metasearch engines that still exists, since 1997. Many of their features are similar to those of other metasearch engines. They were one of the first to have a visual-search. One of the very few which has an “mp3 search” feature, it no longer works very well (but the mp3s it does find are real and do download for free) but perhaps the new version’s will. If Exalead is “the French Google”, then Curry Guide is “the English Google”. On the old site, the image search feature is very weak. The new site works much better, including the image search. Curry guide was the only other engine besides Yandex to find three results in the hard search term test.
http://www.entireweb.com/   }although this engine is said to have a big index, and even though it is only 11 years old, we found that it did poorly in our tests compared to these others. Still, it found 1 of 2 results for our hard search term.
www.exalead.com/search   }this site is still a good site, but uses Google redirects, and in our most recent test, these all failed; however, right-clicking on the URL itself with ‘open in new tab’ fixed the problem. It has features similar to the other search engines listed here but is still unique. As with the others, click preferences to customize your search. Also allows advance searching, with features that some others don’t have, such as phonetic or “sounds like” searching. Allows for “audio” search selection. Inconsistent results, searching deeply for some items then poorly for others. Also has the “inurl” feature. Recommended. Exalead claims to be “the leading provider for searches and search-based-applications”. Its image search feature is very weak, as was the video search feature in our tests. Exalead has 3 other search engines at http://labs.exalead.com/   }but we found them weak.
http://www.freeality.com/meta.htm   }freeality is another site that has been around for years, but is still one of the best search-link sites and reference-link sites on the web. Their site is quick and easy to use, with clearly readable pages, good colors and page layout.  They are definitely one of our major competitors. Of course, no website, including google, is as thorough as JKU is, no one has the breadth and depth of coverage that we do. But since it is fast and easy to use, we consider Freeality highly recommended. Their only flaw, is that often, button or other links are broken links, or DLs as we call them (stands for dead links). It is time-consuming and somewhat tedious to keep up with all the link replacements.
http://www.galaxy.com/    }this little search engine gave better results than some of the big ones. As the Web’s original searchable directory, you can search the web or the directory with it. Good appearance, easy to use. Failed the hard search term test.
http://www.incywincy.com/   }one of the newer search engines (2012). A showcase of Net Research Server (NRS) 5.0, a software product that provides a complete search portal solution, developed by LoopIP LLC. Features: specializes in forms search; allows search with (but not –inurl); and advanced search, prefs, safe search on/off, and a Directory. More info at:  http://www.incywincy.com/default?page=learnmore   }shows their other important features. Unfortunately, it failed completely in our images test, and so can be considered completely useless for image searches. However, it does give some good results, since we have seen it used by our Copernic desktop search, which allows you to group results by engine. 17oct13 Update: DL.
www.info.com   }good for image searches, etc. Info is very competitive with Dogpile, and similar to it (in terms of results, not appearances), but is not an Infoseek product. Found two results in the hard search term test.
http://search.infoweb.net/   }in one of our tests, we had to use a URL proxy to use this search engine, but it was probably an old browser’s glitch (or old computer’s) since the site and engine worked fine through the proxy. Another proxy gave us the “404” error.  However, there is a link for the infoweb:  http://search.iwsearch.net/?mysearch=GoogleMore&cx=partner-pub-4439433893956309%3Aq0ed2xawn7u&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=&sa=Search   }this is the link that gets you to the infoweb search engine. In our test, the engine still  worked and did well. Found two results in the hard search term test.
http://www.ipl.org/   }from Cal’s article on the invisible web, databases, and directories. The IPL is a really good search engine for academic results, but can be used for other searches as well. DL 2015. Replacement:
www.iseek.com   }this is better than a search engine, since it provides information about the search results it finds for you, in the left-hand margin. Similar to Yippy! (formerly Clusty (formerly Vivisimo)), but goes beyond just clusters, highlighting, and search within results, 3 things that make Yippy! one of our favorite search engines, and we have see them All. Iseek has some demonstration videos which show how to get more out of the engine: http://www.iseek.com/iseek/info.html?view=about   }and they say “At Vantage Labs, we wanted to use our advanced linguistic, conceptual, and AI technologies to make Web search better by making it more relevant, direct, productive, and intelligent. But what we built isn't just a search engine. By making Web search more intelligent and intuitive, we’ve left "searching" behind and now offer you Targeted Discovery, the new era of information retrieval on the Web.:
www.ixquick.com   }Ixquick is the world’s most private search engine. It was once one of the top-rated metasearch-engines in the world, and is also one of the oldest ones that still exists. Allows, e.g., image searches without using cookies, and does not record your IP address, etc.; only Ixquick does this. You can also do proxy searches through them, thus leaving no traces. Their advanced search is very sophisticated, allowing you to utilize the features that each search engine has; more info at http://us2.ixquick.com/eng/what-makes-ixquick-special.html   }their description page. We find Ixquick’s site- and search result-pages to pleasant looking and easier to read than most search engines. Their image search is one of the best. This is a much better metasearch-engine than google is. Others are better than google in specific ways or with specific features, but this one is better overall, including readability and ease of use. Found two results in the hard search term test. Returns video results basically only from Blinkx, which has been quite FUBAR in recent years. Recommended.
http://www.joeant.com/DIR/search.php   }this is one of the oldest directories on the web, that is still one the web (and not in archive.org). The directory sites are hand-chosen by human editors, however, and so we have included it here. "JoeAnt.com is about providing a directory of quality sites for Internet users. Our goal is to list the best sites for a wide variety of topics giving our users the most relevant results for their searches.
Former Go.com volunteer guides who wanted to keep their community alive by creating a new directory founded JoeAnt.com. It is a community where every editor has the opportunity to make a difference by finding and adding the best sites in their chosen topics. JoeAnt.com was originally launched in the spring of 2001. We soon realized that our rapid growth required some changes. We introduced a new look in August 2002 with changes which included a fully spiderable index, faster results in searches, and better tools for our editors. We do know that JoeAnt will continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our users and our editors. If you want to be a part of this future, become a JoeAnt editor.” Failed one of our search tests.
www.live.com    }advanced search site/domain specification.   }2011 Update: old info: not any more. Now it takes you to your hotmail sign-in page. See also bing.
http://www.lukol.com/       }this is a new site to us, but a stats check of the site showed that it has been around for about 10 years. It seems to be the competition for Ixquick, in that they both offer totally anonymous searching online. They say “Unlike other search engines, Lukol does not track or share personal information: We do NOT record your IP address, browser data, or operating system. We do NOT send tracking cookies to your computer. We do NOT record your search terms. We do NOT share your private data (IP address, cookies, and search terms) with governments. When we obtain enhanced results from Google, we tunnel your search query through our proxy servers, without exposing your IP or cookie data.” Ixquick offers the same services. So, this is like google results through a proxy, same as Ixquick’s Startpage.
www.mamma.com  }mamma is one of the oldest metacrawlers on the Web, since the 1990s. It has a pleasant appearance and ease of use similar to Ixquick. It is good with images and produces results similar to Ixquick but fewer of them. One of our favorite for quick results, since it produces short lists but which usually contain what you’re looking for. They’ve also recently improved their “jobs” tab and added a “local” tab. Mamma has one new drawback, though: it mixes sponsored results in with the search results, not grouped separately, and you have to check each URL to see which is which. Found both results in the hard search term test. May 2014 Update: Mamma be fine. Use as substitute for Yippy now.
http://www.mastersite.com/    }this site has lots of ads, and it is not clear what type of searches it is best for. It seems best for consumer commercial uses.

http://www.monstercrawler.com/   }this crawler did better on our hard tests than most of the others. Its image searches were satisfying as well. We recommend it. Though started in 1999, it’s a current site since this is a new version of it. Found both results in the hard search term test. Highly Recommended among the older engines.

http://www.pandia.com/plus/   }DL 7/2011. Alas, the Pandia Web directory has been shut down, but the page is still up and has a search bar for the famous Open Directory there. 2015 Update: DL.
http://www.pandia.com/metasearch/index.html   }the Pandia metasearch is here. Note that they recently (and unknown to us) gave their top metasearch engine award to Ixquick!. In our tests, this metasearcher found results that several of the best engines and crawlers did not; we consider this a significant result. However, not as many of them were relevant to the search term as we would have liked. DL 2104.

http://www.search.com/   }”Search.com, owned by CNET Networks, is a truly excellent meta search engine. Search.com retrieves results from Google, Ask Jeeves, LookSmart, AltaVista, MSN Search, and more. Search.com, being part of the CNET network, also gives you instant access to their stable of technology sites, which include CNET.com (obviously), Download.com, and ZDNet.com.”Unfortunately, this one failed completely in our image test.
http://www.seekfreak.com/    }this site was started in 2003 and is still up and running today (Oct.2014). From the frontpage, you can select dual or quad, and when you enter your search term, it will display results in 2 or 4 search result windows respectively. For dual, it uses bing and google. For quad, bing, google, ask, and then repeated bing in the fourth window in our tests. This is very handy for searches, since you can 1-click to many other search engines from the same page. In our test it instantly linked to Mamma, one of the other search engines on this List. Easily adds to browser engine list or bookmarks and bookmarklets. Recommended. Every engine we tested for this site still works, except for one. Site has a page which allows user to add bookmarks for the selected search engines directly to the bookmark bar.

http://www.whak.com    }older search which can only be used from within seekfreak, above. When used by itself, it redirects to the seekfreak webpage. When used from within seekfreak, it returns its own results, but gets them from master.com. However, it produced rather different results from bing and google in one of our harder tests, so we Recommend it.
www.yahoo.com    }same, plus Yahoo’s results page will translate a page. Found two results in the hard search term test. 2014 Update: yahoo search is owned by bing now, but the URL still works, apparently still using yahoo’s own directory. We will have to test further to determine this. We want to know, does Bing use their engines and directory and then supply the results to yahoo? Is yahoo now just a portal for bing?
http://dir.yahoo.com/   }this is the page for searching Yahoo’s directory, rather than its search engine. See the brief intro/tutorial at http://www.pandia.com/resources/search-directories.html   }see below for more info.

https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro?.scrumb=    }the Yahoo Directory page, one of the oldest directories on the web.
www.yippy.com    }May 2014 Update: Yippy appears to be dying now, also. It has declined as a search engine or metasearch engine in recent years. 2015 Update: use http://www.iseek.com  instead, or one of the other clustering search engines listed here. Lexxe is a natural language search engine like Iseek or hakia. PolyMeta is similar; and PolyMeta is a clustering search engine, and so is IBoogie. Gigablast can cluster results, as well.

C. Visual sites: (see also the Photolist http://bit.ly/xW0TcJ  and the Videolist http://sdrv.ms/OxyWpF for more visual search engines and apps.)
www.grokker.com    }new visual engine. DL 2011. We were quite surprised to see Grokker down! It’s not that old, was interesting, and worked well.
www.kartoo.com   }original visual search. 2011 Update: Kartoo is apparently no longer a visual search engine, although it was the first of them that we knew of. It has been completely redesigned and is now an easy-to-read, fast metasearch engine. The strange thing about Kartoo is that all the other search results and lists still think that it is a graphical or visual engine – even Kartoo itself! However, it yields no graphical results at all in any of our tests. It did, however, surprise us by finding four results in the hard search term test! The same three that Yandex found, plus an additional one related closely to one of those. No other search engine to date has found four results, three of them relevant and one related to one of them.
http://www.masternewmedia.org/top-visual-search-engines-the-most-interesting-ways-to-visually-explore-search-engine-results/   }one researcher’s ratings of the visual search engines.
http://www.oskope.com/   }this is a different kind of visual search engine. After selecting a source, then topic, subject, or category, this “throws” images up on the screen, and you can change the viewing size of them. It takes a little time for the engine to find the images and show them, so give it a minute to work. Hovering enlarges. Since two of the sources are commercial sales sources, you can view products of any kind before you buy them (if images are available). We’re recommending this to Julie Éclair and she’ll test its usefulness for her image collections. Try out the view settings. Recommended. 2014 Update: this is now the best of the visual search engines. Many are gone, and spezify really doesn’t work that well anymore, and so on.
http://www.pixlogic.com/products/Web%20Edition.html   }although we usually only link to free products and services, we mention this piXserve Web Edition since it is supposed to be the ultimate image tool. We were unable to find a free version of this. Read their info page, and the free pdf download advertisements, and you’ll see what we mean. Apparently, the CIA, for example, uses a version of this for identifying people by their faces: facial recognition. Here is: http://www.forbes.com/2004/05/04/cx_pp_0504visualsearch_ii.html   }a very informative article about the software and piXlogic, the company that makes it.
http://www.quintura.com/?request=&tab=0&page=1&tabid=   }not really a true visual search engine, it gives a tag-cloud above the results, which are then simply displayed in the usual manner. It did average on our tests for a relatively hard item, but not quite as well as Kartoo. However: the tag-cloud can be used like Yippy’s clusters, to select which search results to display, a very good feature. Sites automatically opened in new window, w/o having to fiddle w/settings. Quintara also found three results, along with Curry Guide and Yandex, in our hard term test. 11nov13 Update: this URL now geos to Quintara Kids, for children.
http://www.search-cube.com/    }produces a 3-d visual cube consisting of images from the webpages that are the search results. The controls are a little “sticky” and some patience is required in the use of it. It is like a toy; the same results (and better and worse) can be obtained from the other engines, but, we include it as a visual search engine. Also found three results in our hard search term test. Update 2014: the old search cube is gone, and the site claims they are working on a new one. Currently redirects to a google custom search.
http://wwws.spacetime.com/#   }this visual search engine searches google, Wikipedia, and youtube for results. In our tests, it performed well on the “youtube” setting, but poorly on the “google”, “images”, and “Wikipedia” settings, often producing no results at all, or no previews (images) from these at all. We didn’t like it except for youtube previews. This one also found three results in our hard search term test, but couldn’t produce images for any of them, not on “google” setting, and not on “images” setting. That’s a big failure for a visual search engine.
http://www.spezify.com/   }this is the newest visual search result site, and it is fun to use, but can be non-obvious at times. Uses (apparently) Flash to post results on a page in a visual format, consisting of excerpts from the page(s) found. Newest Flash apparently required. One of our favorite visual searches, though not a map, and not graphical in that sense. Failed the hard search term test completely, finding no results at all. Did fairly well in our image test, but returned flash files for results. For images, click on the panel at the bottom of the image to go to the site with image selected;  but otherwise you are stuck at that image. When you find a way to go to the searchpage www.spezify.com again, your query is gone, and spezify does not have type-ahead. So, images and videos are flash files. They say: “When searching with Spezify, a visual overview of a word or a subject appears. Pictures, texts, micro blogs, videos and music from a range of websites and search engines are presented side by side. Today Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, MSN Live Search and Twitter are found among the content providers. We eventually found a way to back up to the results page without losing them, but, we rate this site difficult and tricky to use.
www.touchgraph.com    }allows searches by URLs. This seems to be basically a pay-site or –app, but you can use it free here:  http://www.touchgraph.com/seo   }just find the input bar, and then click “Graph it!” button. This is probably the best visual search engine for actual research, that you can use for free. (JKU never advertises nor endorses commercial products. We are Free.) Usage: click on a cluster and the URLs, quotes, excerpts, etc., all the data appears on the left-hand part of the screen. If you click “get related”, it shows a new cluster based on the selected item. Found only two results in our hard search term test.

www.411.com  }one of the best free searches. Returns many results, and quickly, including in what turned out to be a “hard test” for almost all the people search engines. Recommended. 26jan14 Update: http://www.411.com/reverse_phone   }site may be broken. In an easy reverse-lookup test, result page was blank and there was no work-around possible. In an earlier similar test, found data on the number with no problems. Showed on map, gave address, type of phone or phone line, and carrier.  25mar14 Update: site is working fine.
www.anywho.com   }U.S. White and Yellow pages from AT&T.  The AnyWho White Pages is updated weekly with phone numbers of individuals from across the nation. For best results, include both the first and last name when searching the AnyWho White Pages and, if you have it, the ZIP Code. Search for local businesses by name to quickly find their Yellow Pages listings with basic details and maps, plus any additional time and money-saving features, such as coupons, video profiles or online reservations. Search by category to browse and filter local business listings and to see mapped results. Or, if you just have a number, search for a business by phone number to find its Yellow Pages listing just as well. Whatever method works for you best, it's all good. Also reverse look-up, zip & area code finder, and maps

http://www.peekyou.com/   }this is another good free people search, did well in our tests. Recommended. Second-best after Pipl, and as good as Zabasearch, below. Main flaw with most of these sites, is that (after finding the person you’ve named, etc.) they give very little information, and are trying, sometimes too hard, to redirect you in to the big pay-for “background check” websites, “premium” people finders, and so on. There are only about 4 of those, and most of the former people-search engines redirect to them. They are big-bidness and make a lot of money charging people for data that is free, and that’s why we won’t list them here. This one links to peoplesmart, which charges for the street address.
http://www.peoplesmart.com/psp.aspx?_act=go&search=name   }this service also returns a long, simple, easy to read list of results given just first, last, and state; but unfortunately is a pay site and so we don’t recommend it.

http://www.reversephonedirectory.com/reverse-phone-lookup/   }works, but is a pay-service. Found 1 record in an easy test. In another test, found a free result immediately.
http://snitch.name/   }in our tests, this service did well. It returns results from several of the most popular people-search services, and displays their results all on one page. You can use the provider’s webpage right on the snitch page. However, we are unable to recommend it, since the providers are all pay-for services, and won’t give you the info without paying by credit card first.  Uses 123people.com, which charges for the address.

Access Premium Searches here at Zaba by logging in with your Facebook account. It's simple, and fast.”  Well, it is one of the second-best people-search sites, with Pipl being the first best. It did well in our tests, and returned many results for a person whose location we know, including where he used to live, that is, the correct result.

bubl.ac.uk/link/v/video.htm      }directory of directories with links to sites with video.
www.blinkx.com   }This site opens with showing you a visual menu of selections; however, clicking on it didn’t show us the video! First IE blocked the download, then after that we were frustrated by various other screens, and eventually, porn videos, presented by Blinkx. Very disappointing performance from a video service that was formerly one of our favorites. Evidently Blinkx was very changed when youtube bought it. Eventually, we found the video we’d selected again, but then, it showed us only a preview of, and then continued on to a video that we hadn’t selected, w/o asking us. Very poor performance. (When we finally got to the source website, it wouldn’t play the video at all, not even a preview.)That is, both the the Blinkx and ABS News website’s videos are broken now, and don’t work anymore.
http://browse.lt/   }a new site. This site did well in our video tests. It gives results for you tube, daily motion, vimeo, and metacafe, on 4 tabs of one page. Fast, easy to see and use, a simple search engine. For news, you have Delfi, Alfa, BBC, CNN, and RIA Novsoti, as tabs all on on page. Definitely an HQ search engine.
http://www.etr-usa.com/products/   }The MediaMaster system offers a complete solution for scheduling and controlling centralized sources and media titles from your classroom. The MediaScheduler component lets you schedule sources and media titles from your computer.MediaController lets you control various sorts of video sources, and your classroom monitor. MediaController offers: Visual representations of the sources. The “rack” for displaying the available sources. Graphical logos of most popular television networks, which speeds recognition. A unified way of controlling sources like VCRs and DVD players so they all work the same way, even if they are different brands or models. Control of the classroom monitor via a keypad like that on a remote control. MediaScheduler offers: The ability to sort the media title database by any of the descriptive fields. Dynamic database filters to reduce the number of titles shown by filtering by any of the titles’ textual fields. You can ask the title browser to show only DVD titles having “frog” in their description, for example. A list of events scheduled in the near future so you can quickly see what is scheduled and when. The ability to see full details about a title or scheduled event by clicking on it. The classroom computer and monitor are connected to the media center over the school’s network. This allows you to control the centralized sources and see the result on your classroom monitor as though the source was right there in the classroom.

https://ixquick.com/do/search   }we mention Ixquick’s video search here since it is surprisingly poor, compared to others, for an otherwise very good metasearch engine. They rely mostly on Blinkx, in our test, and Blinkx is very FUBAR since it was acquired by another company some years back. Avoid Blinkx now.
http://www.kartoo.com/download/download-online-videos.htm   }kartoo’s list of video downloaders. Some of these we have tested and listed here or, for example, in Web Tools. Some were DLs. Some are links to other lists of downloaders and converters. Note that many of these won’t install properly or won’t install on public computers, of which millions are in daily use across the U.S. Also we didn’t have time to check Kartoo’s linklist for DLs; and finally, we don’t use any of the “downloaders”, etc., on their linklist, and haven’t had the time to test more than a few. For instance, we tested the ImTOO app(s), but eventually chose other ones for our own use.

http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/morgan/php/news.php   }JPEG2000 is the new international standard for image compression method and file format. This is the successor of the well-known traditional JPEG written by the ISO group Joint Photographic Experts Group. Contrary to the technology JPEG which used DCT functions, JPEG2000 technology is based on an mathematical algorithm called wavelets to compress image that provides high compression with image quality superior to all existing standard encoding techniques even at low bit rates. That’s the reason why JPEG2000 has a number of advantages over the JPEG Format. Morgan products all have a free trial period, 30 or 60 days typically, but they have no freeware.
http://codecs.necromancers.ru/   }Codec is short for compressor/decompressor, it is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. Perhaps that’s since we don’t care what’s “trending now”, but yahoo does.  But here: http://video.yahoo.com/explore/   }they host or link to 37 featured networks. For our test, we selected the space channel, and it showed us and advertisement for a furniture store. Eventually, there was a 10:34 video about space exploration. http://www.betaboston.com/news/2015/09/28/harvards-internet-monitor-tracks-web-traffic-and-outages-across-the-globe/   }Harvard University has a new Internet-monitoring tool that should be catnip to you news junkies. “Launching for free on Monday, the Internet Activity Monitor is a real-time dashboard tracking blackouts, news hits, Internet speeds, and outages across the world. The service pulls in public data from services such as data-transfer mega-highway Akamai, and security firm Kaspersky.”  “You can sign up for a personal account and organize a series of dashboards that suit your needs, sort of like a Pinterest board documenting Internet speeds in South Korea or outages in Pakistan.”  One suggestion: one of the things I can do is monitor news from a certain country
for a certain term. Great. But it would be great if you could specify what language you want it in. If I want to monitor Russian Federation news for the term “Google” (because I’m still very curious about the antitrust penalties) I’m sure there is news available in English. But all I’m getting is Russian.

https://github.com/juhanurmi/ahmia/wiki    }Ahmia is a free search engine software for Tor hidden service websites. You can test the running search engine at ahmia.fi. Building a search engine for anonymous web sites running inside the Tor network  is an interesting problem to solve. Tor enables web servers to hide their location and Tor users can connect to these authenticated hidden services while the server and the user both stay anonymous. However, finding web content is laborious without a good search engine and therefore a search engine is needed for the Tor network.

http://searchengineland.com/guide/what-is-seo   }SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with paid search ads.
http://searchengineland.com/google-now-crawling-and-indexing-flash-content-14299    }Historically, search engines have been unable to extract content, such as text and links, from Flash (SWF) files. Subsequently, much of the Flash-based content on the web has been unavailable in search results. This situation has been frustrating for web developers, who have tried to come up with workarounds to help get search engines to index and rank their Flash pages. This situation hasn’t been ideal for searchers either, as this limitation has kept them from seeing potentially great matches for their queries because they’ve been locked away in Flash files. According to Adobe and Google, all of that is changing. Google is launching what they tell me is a “deep algorithmic change,” augmented by Flash reader technology supplied by Adobe, that enables them to “read” Flash files and extract text and links from it for better indexing and ranking. This could be great news for both site owners and searchers

They categorize their links, but they’re all on one huge page. Ours are categorized better. This page is just for searching and researching; other pages have entertainment links, government links, academic links, etc. We’re still the best at what we do on the web, but we include this page for you since it has links we didn’t use, and so on, for your convenience.

http://www.yougotthenews.com/   }”The #1 Search Engine for US News - Search 5,000+ national, business, and local news sources.“ We tested this, and it impressed us.
