Intelligence is a word commonly associated for intellect alone and I.Q. (Intellectual Quotient) without regard to numerous other functions of Intelligence beyond, but also inclusive of, intellect. The 8-Circuit Brain model, as first developed by Timothy Leary ("Info-Psychology") and then advanced by Robert Anton Wilson ("Prometheus Rising") and myself ("Angel Tech" and "The Eight-Circuit Brain"), posits eight interacting "brains" or functions of Intelligence that are referred to in this model as "circuits". I have distilled the basic definitions and functions of all eight circuits below, along with a primer of how the upper and lower circuits interact with, and act on, each other. - A.A.

C-1 Physio-Biological Intelligence; the will to survive
INTEGRATION: the degree of physical confidence earned and
maintained to assure one's physical survival and health

and maintained to assure one's personal territory and autonomy
C-3 Symbolic-Conceptual Intelligence; the will to reason

maintained to assure one's problem-solving skills and sanity
C-4 Social-Moral Intelligence; the will to socialize
INTEGRATION: the degree of social confidence earned and
maintained to assure one's capacity for interpersonal interaction

Sources: whatever triggers the experience of rapture, communion
with nature, tantra (yoga, meditation, ritual), charisma, second wind,
falling in love (endorphins) and the expanding presence of being here
now. The Shock of Ecstasy and Bliss (the absence of suffering)
C-6 Intuitive-Psychic Intelligence of the Brain, Spine, & CNS
Sources: whatever triggers the experience of the energetic body and
its aura, the second attention, intuition, clairvoyance and other psychic
abilities, ritual magick, reality selection, direct perception of the relative
nature of reality. The Shocks of Uncertainty and Freedom (the absence
of false assumptions, certitudes and dogmas)
C-7 Mytho-Genetic Intelligence of DNA and the Planetary Entity
Sources: whatever triggers the experience of ancestral and past life
memories, autonomous archetypes, synchronicity, planetary (Gaia)
mind, cosmic consciousness. The Shocks of Indivisibility and Cosmic
Unity (the absence of dualistic consciousness)
C-8 Quantum-Nonlocal Intelligence of Subatomic interactions
Sources: whatever triggers the experience of near death, out of body
states, the dreambody and dreamtime, lucid dreaming, communion
with The Void, the mystery of singularity. The Shocks of Death and
Impermanence (the absence of ego identification).



THE THREE SUB-PHASES
HOW INTELLIGENCE CAN BE INCREASED
All eight functions of Intelligence can be accessed through any experience allowing their full absorption, integration and transmission. These three sub-phases reflect the tertiary function of our most basic biological unit of intelligence: the neuron. All three sub-stages are necessary for the advancement of intelligence through each circuit. If you only absorb, nothing can be integrated; if nothing can be integrated, whatever we absorb regurgitates and we end up parroting other people's experiences, mass media associations, what we read in books, etc. Each of these eight levels of experience have their own distinct ways that intelligence is processed, ways that do not necessarily apply to other levels. For example, C-2 emotions follows different processes than C-3 ideas.

SHOCKS & ANCHORS
Each of the eight circuits exist within each individual at various degrees of expression and latency. They can be viewed and approached in a linear sequential "evolutionary" way and/or in a nonlinear "radial" way; both vantages work. It would be erroneous to assume any one circuit as "better" or "worse", or "higher" or "lower" than any other. Better to look at them all as symbolizing states of consciousness simultaneously working together in a dynamic changing whole. To view these circuits hierarchically, by positing any circuit as superior or inferior than any other, feeds the emotional plague, what Wile Reich called "a neurosis marked by irrational insistence on beliefs and ideas that depend on a dissociation of mind and body".
There are countless ways these eight functions interact and/or act on each other. My own research has focused on how the first four "survival" circuits and the second four "post-survival" circuits act on each other in very precise, two-way vertical connectivities. I see the upper circuits acting on the lower circuits as distinct shocks that catalyze growth. I see the lower circuits acting on the upper circuits as stabilizing anchors, how we can absorb and integrate the shocks brought about by expanding consciousness.

VERTICAL CONNECTIVITIES
Without a supple and resilient foundation (the integration of circuits 1-4), any significant force of expanded consciousness (from circuits 5-8) can destabilize us in various ways. However, once the survival circuits can be more fully integrated and their intelligence embodied, an inner strength and stability develops to help absorb and integrate upper circuit experiences which can sometimes arrive as shocks, ie., accelerating states of C-5 Ecstasy, C-6 Uncertainty, C-7 Indivisibility, and C-8 Impermanence.
Upper circuit post-survival shocks stimulate growth and development in the four survival circuits, just as the survival circuits (once integrated) can help substantiate and bring into manifestation the accelerated states of energy symbolized by circuits five through eight. If monitored and tended to, all eight circuits can work together in more meaningful ways to serve the larger dynamic and changing whole they are part of. In this way, the 8-Circuit Brain model can offer a safer, more creative guideline to tending the specific verticalities shared between upper circuit shocks and lower circuit anchors (1/5; 2/6; 3/7; 4/8) on the high seas of consciousness research.

Someday, in the not-too-distant future, certain drugs will be made available to the public claiming the effect of increasing intelligence. Given the opportunity to partake, what would you do ? I'd ask the pharmacist: "Just what kind of intelligence is your pill going to increase ?" Like many others schooled in the public education systems, I once naively assumed "intelligence" and "I.Q." to be synonymous with intellect and intellectual achievement alone. Why did we settle for so little ? Any definition of intelligence set in singular, or monotheistic, terms is probably not intelligence at all but a strand of the dismal fundamentalist virus currently gridlocking minds, young and old alike. How "intelligence" is defined probably determines the kind of intelligence produced.
The "Eight Circuit Brain" is a term Dr. Timothy Leary coined, in his 1977 book "EXO-PSYCHOLOGY", for accessing multiple definitions and functions of human intelligence. Dr. Leary did not invent this system, which probably originated in the Sufi Mystery Schools' arcane study of the "law of octaves", but revised it for modern times. Since Leary's translation, three additional versions have surfaced in Robert Anton Wilson's "PROMETHEUS RISING" (1984) and my own, "ANGEL TECH" (1986) and "The EIGHT-CIRCUIT BRAIN" (2009). As a whole-brain model for Intelligence, the Eight Circuit Brain yields an impressive catch of relevant information about how intelligence acts when redefined by the user. Leary's "circuits" symbolize eight interactive states of consciousness and the neurochemical transactions constantly mingling between them. They are presented here not as a heirarchy -- one is no "better" than another -- but as a web of simultaneous transmissions at various degrees of cognition within each person. (Please refer to any combination of the books mentioned earlier for a more comprehensive study).
For the purpose of this article, Leary's eight circuits have been reframed as "trances" or, states of consciousness, to be altered, bent or broken at will. "Break trance, make trance, break trance". Trances can be instigated by engaging any of the many catalysts that excite and maintain each circuit. Some catalysts are pharmaceutical but many are not. Getting stuck inside any one trance, or circuit, happens when you become addicted to one or more of the catalysts. New trances from other circuits can be introduced to shift addicitions, either in their linear sequence or at random. First Circuit security trance can be broken by a Second Circuit emotional trance which, in turn, can be dissipated by a Third Circuit semantic trance. The neuropharmacy of your own brain produces all the effects, even those involving ingested drugs which depend on receptors in your brain to work.
AUTHOR'S DISCLAIMER: I do not condone the use of illegal drugs. For information purposes only certain drugs are identified hereafter as "triggers", or catalysts, for accessing the Eight Circuit Brain. I trust the reader is also aware of the value inherent to self-activation of these states inside the "drug-free" highs of technological, ritualistic, sociological, religious and/or psychotherapeutic methods, as well. Some of the triggers listed below I have experimented with; anonymous and knowledgeable sources were consulted with those I have avoided.

FIRST CIRCUIT: BIOSURVIVAL-SECURITY TRANCE.
Preoccupies itself with physical safety and biological survival. Revolves around basic security needs and the warm, buzzy nodding sensations of infant bliss and being taken care of at the most primary levels of existence: food, shelter and enough sleep. When frustrated or over-emphasized the search for security intensifies, becomes an obsession and finally an addiction. Security Addiction expresses the lowest energy state of all trances. When the needs of this center are fulfilled, one lives with the knowledge of being a "survivor" with some ability to stabilize and secure others. SECURITY CATALYSTS: Food, water, shelter, sleep, maternal lactation, Valium, 3-6 hrs. of television, Prozac, all sedatives, nicotine, most pain-killers, PCP, morphine and heroin. Any drug acting on the breathing mechanism of the brain stem by slowing it down and, by overdose, stopping it entirely. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Survival anxiety. The fear of: dying, of living, of eating (bolemia & anorexia), of chaos and of dirt. Obesity and malnurtrition.

SECOND CIRCUIT: TERRITORIAL-EMOTIONAL TRANCE.
Emotions as territorial signals. The compulsion for self-expression and personal freedom. Churns on the more aggressive emotional needs for dominance (political force), status, and self-esteem. Flight-or-fight reflex producing adrenaline rushes when confronting danger and personal triumph, as well as the depression and anxiety attacks often associated with low self-worth, feelings of helplessness and self-diminshment. When frustrated or over-emphasized, emotions inflate and/or deflate yielding conditions of taking oneself too seriously and/or not seriously enough. Mood swings. Emotional and Sexual Addictions. When emotional needs are satisfied, ego-strength and autonomy develop with some ability to excite, motivate and provoke others. EMOTIONAL CATALYSTS: Alcohol beverages. Amyl nitrate. Temper tantrums. Shouting matches. Military marches. Martial arts. High volume rock'n'roll. Slamdancing. Reichean therapy. Any "drug" relaxing emotional inhibitions or catalyzing catharsis. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Anxiety. Hypertension. Hysteria. Emotional dissipation and debilitation. Emotional numbness and vacancy.

THIRD CIRCUIT: CONCEPTUAL-SEMANTIC TRANCE.
Learning intellectual and linguistic skills for grasping and communicating ideas. Spins off conceptual needs for solving problems, defining terms, making maps, and articulating meaning. The central nervous system buzz of stimulating conversation, thinking, writing, reading and other symbolic and mathematical acts. When over-emphasized, one feels "locked inside one's head" with the angst of conceptual redundancy. Word Trance. Symbolic Addictions. When frustrated, psychological fears of becoming "stupid" or "insane" or "misinformed" or "meaningless" confuse thought processes. When satisfied, intellect and language develop coherency to support meaningful communication with others; one can "say what one means and mean what one says". SEMANTIC CATALYSTS: Reading, writing, arithmetic, speech, speaking on the telephone, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, chocolate, diet pills, amphetamines, cocaine. Consistent exposure to computer monitors, Internet and other on-line virtual communications systems. Any "drugs" acting on the various nervous systems as a stimulant to quicken thinking, speech patterns and symbolic associations. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Nervousness. Thinking or talking too much. Mental exhaustion. Stuttering. Neurosis.

FOURTH CIRCUIT: MORALISTIC-SOCIAL TRANCE.
Development of personality in context to society. Social needs for belonging, getting along with people, developing friendships, romance, courtships, partnerships, marriages, domestication, family, and those morals and ethics maintaining community interest. The push and pull of attracting and repulsing forces -- estrogen, testosterone & other growth hormones -- influencing likes, dislikes, procreative love, mating rituals, domestic and community structures, and the morales and beliefs surrounding relations with others. When over-emphasized, personal identity homogenizes, or blends, into herd or tribal mentality. Social and Moral Addictions. When frustrated, the individual experiences alienation, marginalization and degrees of abandonment by the tribe, sometimes resulting in "psychopathic criminal retribution". As social needs are satisfied, a well-adjusted personality finds "its people" while defining and claiming its unique behavioral and ethical code amidst a society far too complex to always condone them. SOCIAL CATALYSTS: Social rituals, parties and gatherings. Cultural events and concerts. Church. Any "drugs" delivering social or community acceptance or sexual approval in exchange for submission to externally-imposed behaviorial standards and moralities. Most television programs. Organized Religion. Mass Media. Corporate Advertising. The Welfare State. Social Security. Fascism. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Loss of personality, autonomy and self as individual identity. Guilt complex, ie., confusion between the morality of others and one's own ethics.

FIFTH CIRCUIT: SOMATIC-HEDONIC TRANCE
Disconnected from the previous goals and survival concerns of Circuits 1-4, this center is the opening of the five senses as the chief source of all life and relevant information. Being Here Now. The natural sensory rhythms and impulses of the body uncensored by mental, emotional or moral intervention. The hedonic needs for rapture, bliss and ecstatic experience. The post-survival quest for nirvana. When frustrated, the despair and spiritual discontent of "entrapment in the corporeal world of survival issues." When over-emphasized, excessive hedonism becomes debauch, dispersion and disintegration of personal integrity and concentration, ie., "spaced out bliss ninnies." Ecstacy Junkies. When hedonic needs are met, a state of charismatic magnetism infuse the personality, as seen with some rock stars, film celebrities and performing artists. HEDONIC CATALYSTS: Empathogens (MDMA, etc.). cannabis, opium, hashish, lower doses of psilocybin, Tantric and Hatha yoga, listening to music (subjective assessment), sex magick, performing live dance and live theatre, Sufi whirling dervishes, ecstatic pagan rituals, falling in love, endorphin rushes from "second wind" states (long distance running and working out), verbal fasting (mandatory silence), zen meditation. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: "Spaciness." Loss of meaningful connection with "consensus reality" sometimes showing poor time management and an oblivion to the emotions, thoughts and ethics of others. Time/spatial disorientation and distortions. Difficulty articulating, ie., "Like, wow, man..."

SIXTH CIRCUIT: NEURO-PSYCHIC TRANCE.
"Brain pleasure"; the subjective absorption of intense light. Opening of the "third eye", clairvoyance, telepathy and other supersensual, or psychic, abilities. Incoming signals are registered at light speed and translated by an active intuition, unencumbered by empirical demands of linear ideation. The Self-Aware Brain. Future-oriented vision; premonitions, precognitions and prophecy. The psychic need for seeing and knowing things as they are, beyond the illusions, dreams and fantasies projected by previous states. When frustrated, the "sixth sense" atrophies and psychic, or soul, death ensues. When over-emphasized nervous disorders, hallucinations and mental illnesses develop in the struggle to act and respond to the influx of overwhelming impressions. Vision, or Truth, Addiction. When psychic needs are met, lucidity stabilizes perception to accept things as they are while seeing through the scams, the lies, and the illusions often shrouding them. This lucidity can also illuminate the truth of things to the world and in others. PSYCHIC CATALYSTS: Kundalini and Raja yogas, Rajneesh's chaotic meditations, surviving the loss of a loved one, higher doses of psilocybin, mescaline, peyote, LSD, "Heavenly Blue" morning glory seeds, near-death experiences, sense-deprivation, isolation tanks, solitary confinement, intensive Buddhist retreats, Antero Alli's paratheatrical ritual technology, video/filmmaking and editing processes. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Paranoia. Schitzophrenic fragmentation. Loss of emotion and meaningful connection with the feelings of others. Psychotic breaks. Violence.

SEVENTH CIRCUIT: GENETIC-MYTHOPOETIC TRANCE.
The Central Nervous System receives signals from DNA; when this center opens, the signals become conscious. Racial and species memory (reincarnation and past lives) enters present-time awareness. Overwhelming sense of unity with all living things. Realization of the complex, interconnecting mandalic consciousness of DNA-RNA, synchronicity and what Jung called the universal archetypes. When frustrated, bigotry, racial prejudice, nationalist and religious tunnel vision often leading to species self-persecution, genocide and war. When over-emphasized, pervasive disorientation erupts as previously invisible archetypes cross over to waking consciousness, shocking the ego and disrupting survival routines. Fears of insanity and socio-political and religious persecution. God Addiction. When mythopoetic needs are met, sanity is redefined through the imaginal realm and given mythological and poetic expression in poetry, inspirational verse, classic mythology, certain music and film, Etc. MYTHOPOETIC CATALYSTS: Childbirth, religious conversion experiences, mystical revelations, higher doses of LSD, kundalini awakenings (via the crown chakra), the chaos magick of Peter Carroll and Aleister Crowley, Stanislav Grof's LSD rebirthing therapy, Datura, DMT, near-death experiences. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Dysfunctional messianic complexes, delusions of grandeur, paranoia, mental incapacitation, psychosis.

EIGHTH CIRCUIT: QUANTUM-DREAMBODY TRANCE
Consciousness at the level of unpredictable subatomic behavior. This center opens after consciousness leaves the physical body while functioning independently in nonlocal "cyberspace." Shamanic initiation into Castaneda's dreaming and "the Nagual" as a conscious visiting spirit, or dreambody. Consciousness leaves the body. The body is left behind, unconscious; comatose and/or sleeping. Where does consciousness go ? What happens there ? Who shows up on "the other side" ? Questions for the dreambody. Dr. Leary suggests the ultra-gravitational "singularity" physicists theorize at the heart of the atomic nucleus to be the stuff of black holes. Fusion with Black Hole as Ultimate Destiny ?! Out-of-Body Addiction to Formlessness. DREAMBODY CATALYSTS: Heavy doses of Nitrous Oxide, DMT, Ketamine, Jimson weed, Datura, Sonora desert toad ( Bufo alvarius) venom, Near-death and Out-of-Body experiences, Eckankar astral travel techniques, lucid dreaming, Malaysian Senoi tribal dreamwork, Australian aboriginal dreamtime walkabouts, advanced virtual reality "immersion technologies", and any "drugs" that simulate near-death OR death experience without producing the actual experience of physical death itself, ie., Haitian voodoo zombie powder extracted from certain species of puffer fish. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Partial to complete loss of bodily functions. Comatose. Death without discernible cause.
The Eight-Circuit Brain, like any psychological grid or map, is incomplete at describing the totality of the territory it symbolizes. Imagine an organ as mysterious and powerful as the human brain having only eight functions of intelligence!? Yet as a whole-brain model for mapping functions and behaviors of various "brains within the brain" I believe the Eight-Circuit map is unprecedented. I do not recommend using it at the exclusion of other equally valid systems, like the Enneagram or in some cases Astrology, but as another tool in the "psychic archeologist's toolbox" for unearthing hereto unknown relics of our past, present and future history.

Six Questions about Synchronicity

Question 1 : What is the limit between a synchronicity and an illusory correlation bias?
What limits perception of authentic synchronicity? The automatic assignment of meaning. We often unconsciously assign meaning to events whether they are inherently meaningful or not. When this automatic mental action happens around our daily coincidences, it can create a deep and meaningless trance of faux synchronicity -- a form of self-hypnosis where we con (convince) ourselves into believing something carries far more significance than it actually deserves. Discerning between assumed, or projected, meaning and an authentic open perception of innate meaning demands a consistent practice of reality checking our perceptions. If no reality checks occur, we court self-delusion. When we are writing our own reality checks, we are more likely to liberate a second attention or, an awareness not linked to the thinking machine but to Presence. And authentic synchronicity expresses a Presence beyond the thinking machine.

Question 2 : Is there a link between the creative process of an individual
and the apparition of synchronicity unto his life ?
That depends on how “creativity” is defined, approached, and expressed. Creativity fueled by ego, with its relentless demand for credit and attention, can arouse narcissistic fantasies of excessive self-importance which can exaggerate the significance of whatever is being created, ie., “my ideas will change the world.” This type of limited creativity expresses the infantile stages of ego development that may be necessary to further evolution and maturity, ie., you first need an ego to get beyond ego. If you can get beyond ego, you can open up to sources of creativity beyond your wildest imagination. This process has been dramatized in my group paratheatre workwith the Muse archetype. Wherever interaction and dialogue with autonomous archetypes can guide the ego to serve creation, rather than identify as a “creator”, the playing fields of creation seriously expand. Any process where the personal ego serves transpersonal forces nurtures a mature relationship with creation while opening the doors of perception to more synchronicity.

Question 3 : Can synchronicity be a personal development tool?
If so, what are the benefits and can these benefits be gained
by active use of synchronicity?
As I understand synchronicity we are talking about awareness of, and participation in, a transpersonal event beyond our control and comprehension. Though we can experience it, I doubt it can be willed or figured out like some puzzle. The phrase “active use of synchronicity” has the ring of self-delusion to me. It is more likely that synchronicity actively uses us. To benefit from being “used” by synchronicity requires nonchalance. Don’t make synchronicity a big deal. Synchronicity may simply be the standard time zone of the cosmos - behind the common misconception of time as defined by the clock face. 
Another way of getting closer to the experience of synchronicity is to fully believe in yourself. If synchronicity expresses the hidden timing behind all existing events, then it stands to reason that our experience of good timing may depend on synchronization with existence, of a personal alignment with the existing conditions of our lives. When we align our minds with existence, we self-synchronize. I think Goethe's word for synchronicity was Providence:
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. Question 4 : How can synchronicity give insight into someone's unconscious ?
What is possible to discover this way?
If synchronicity expresses the innate timing of the universe, then it runs deeper than what the conscious mind can usually detect. Until the phenomena of synchronicity shocks our ego into awareness of itself, this hidden timing continues playing out while we’re not watching, whether that be in our nocturnal dream life or our daytime waking life. What we perceive as synchronicity may only be the tip of the iceberg. The universe may not only be stranger than we think; it may be stranger than we CAN think. As for containing insights into the unconscious, that depends on how much new information and shock a person can allow or endure. Insight is not always wonderful. If we cannot find new ways to live with more truth about ourselves, insight can become a source of annoyance, anxiety and dread. Living with more truth may also amount to how much compassion you can show yourself and others. Truth without compassion feels like cruelty to me.

Question 5 : What’s the relationship between synchronicity and individual
and collective archetypes?
Before this question can be addressed, we must first understand what is meant by the oft misunderstood and over-used term,“archetype”. Since psychologist Carl Jung first made this term popular over fifty years ago, as he did with “synchronicity”, I refer to his notion of the origins of archetypes:
“It seems to me their origin [i.e. archetypes] can only be explained
by assuming them to be deposits of the constantly repeated
experiences of humanity.”

Going on Jung’s assumption, the relationship between synchronicity and individual & collective archetypes may exist as a deeply complex network of communication lines shared between autonomous psychic events. They are autonomous when they have lives and agendas of their own. The constantly repeated experiences of humanity over centuries and aeons creates its own massive multi-layering weave in the collective psyche that webs our psyches together on deep unconscious levels.Repeating the same experiences deepen neurological grooves in the brain that act out in predictable behavior and habit patterns. We are fated to redundancy until we make some choices to go against the grain of old habits and engage new experiences to break the redundancy trance of habitual response.
With that said, I see the relationship between synchronicity and individual and collective archetypes opening up as a never-ending mystery to be lived, rather than any problem to be solved or any event to be merely comprehended. Psychic events linking us with synchronicity and the archetypes link us to the transpersonal. As such, these events are not likely to be subject to our beck and call or our control or immediate comprehension. Though all these psychic events can be experienced directly and offer unspoken insights and revelations, it may be a misguided effort to try and define or categorize them for any sake of intellectual convenience. Those ambitions may be best served by intuition and more sensory processes via more artistic mediums like poetry, music, cinema, and any other creative mediums giving expression to the ineffable but without provision of explanation, thesis, or formula.

Question 6 : What type of belief can increase the manifestation
of synchronicity and its significance ?
Total belief in oneself tempered by deep receptivity and empathy to others and the living planet. The world we know and live in may be more mental than we realize. That's the way of culture and cultural trance. If we are to open up to the innate timing of existence, it may not be enough to break cultural trance and open the doors of perception. We may have to walk out through those doors to a place beyond the constructs of the mind itself -- where labels, explanations, and theories fail and where our hearts ignite in a blaze of feral creation.

HOW THE TWO ATTENTIONS WORK
What we pay attention to informs the content of our minds; how we pay attention informs the quality of our minds. Two types of attention demonstrate these distinctions (hereafter called "first attention" and "second attention"). The first attention refers to that awareness linked to language, thinking and the automatic assignment of labels and meaning. The second attention refers to that awareness linking to presence, energy, and phenomena without any assignment of meaning. Both attentions are important and necessary for different reasons.
The primary purpose of the first attention involves solving survival problems, such as figuring out where to find enough food, water, and shelter to stay alive. Once these basic problems are solved, the first attention continues its automatic processes of labelling the objects, and the people in our immediate environment. At some point, this labelling attention turns inward to analyze the type of work we can do to solve the money problem of assuring future survival. After entering public education systems, the first attention sophisiticates its labelling processes beyond the concrete concerns of survival priorities through an increase of abstract thought, ie., philosophy, mathematics, history, etc. Abstract thought disconnects attention from the immediate environment and redirects attention into the strata of mind alone. Whether our concerns are concrete or abstract, the first attention continues its automatic (unconscious) inner activity of labelling and assigning meaning.
The primary purpose of the second attention involves the simple act of seeing, of witnessing without assigning meaning to whatever is being perceived. As the aperture of perception dilates and opens, we perceive more reality -- not our ideas of reality or what that reality might mean -- but the existing conditions of the way things actually are. As more reality is perceived, the second attention dialtes to a more direct experience of certain immutable principles of existence, such as uncertainty and impermanence, principles that do not require any assignment of meaning. When the second attention activates, we become more aware of uncertainty as a creative state where possibilities replace certitudes and a spirit of discovery guides the way. The second attention sophisticates with any direct experience and acceptance of the state of impermanence -- the fact that everything changes and undergoes death and rebirth in perpetua. As we awaken to impermanence, we awaken to our mortality -- not just our own but others' and not just as an idea or concept but a reality. 

HOW THE TWO ATTENTIONS CAN WORK TOGETHER
These two attentions function separately and/or together at various degrees. Left alone, the first attention fixates awareness on survival issues -- such as security, status, analysis, money, problem solving, and social needs. Left alone, the second attention fixates on "post-survival" luminosities such as ecstasy, rapture, clairvoyance, telepathy, sources of inspiration, intuition, creativity, and the imaginal powers of dreaming. 
The first attention expresses a function of physical sight and intellect; the second attention links to the energetic body and intuition with biological correlations in the pineal gland. The two attentions are linked the way external sight is linked to insight and clairvoyance. Though both attentions are linked, their mutual interaction remains for the most part latent and rarely made conscious during daytime waking hours. Discovering and developing meaningful interactions between both attentions involves a kind of double vision for 1) seeing through appearances and into underlying infrastructures and essences of reality and 2) developing truthful interpretations of these insights. 
The first attention stabilizes awareness; the second attention destabilizes awareness. First attention stability feeds on the pursuit of certitudes such as fixed beliefs, ideas, preconceptions, assumptions, and dogmas. The more unstable second attention comes alive as we permit more uncertainty and when we find that inner stillness of being unknown to ourselves. The second attention opens and/or narrows according to each person's anxiety threshold or, how much uncertainty we can permit before anxiety sets in. Anxiety expresses a natural response of the nervous system when we reach the limit for how much uncertainty we can bear. 
Both attentions can be strengthened through different types of concentration. First attention can be strengthened by concentrating on the meaning of an event or perception. Second attention can be strengthened by a concentrated merging with the energy or phenomena of whatever is being perceived. First attention creates a picture and assigns a story, a message or meaning to it. The second attention attunes to the signal, frequency or vibration of the energy. A message is the ordering of a signal. Second attention gets the signal, first attention organizes it into a message. 
This interplay between signal and message happens by itself - unconsciously and beyond our control -- at the speed of light. The second attention absorbs luminosity and is light-sensitive; the first attention translates energy (light) through pattern recognition. The second attention acts like a radar dish receiving raw signals from inner and outer space, whereas the first attention is like the computer program that translates incoming signals as readable data and then, outputs the data

IMBALANCE IN THE TWO ATTENTIONS
The first attention can act as an anchor to the second attention, as the second attention can act as a catalyst or shock to the first attention. The first attention anchors the second attention when we learn to find words, images, and ideas that most truthfully serve the authenticity of the second attention signal. The second attention shocks the first attention awake with the experience of more uncertainty and the option to experience the unknown firsthand. If the second attention fails to anchor itself in the first attention, the absorption of luminosity can accelerate and overstimulate the nervous systems; the brain heats up and we are overwhlemed with psychic energy and images. Not unlike a power surge through an electrical wire without a ground, the energy sputters, disperses and fails to deliver. 
Whenever the first attention consistently avoids uncertainty and resists the unknown, our thinking processes can rigidify, grow brittle, and become overly literalist. Eventually, this over-literalization of thinking can result in claustrophobic sensations, paranoia, and imagination death. Educational systems of western civilization have assigned the first attention with a priori status by giving out the highest grades for how much knowledge we can retain. The problem with this is that we learn to equate not knowing with Failure. The "knowing mind" belongs as much to the first attention as much as the "not knowing mind" belongs to the second attention. First attention secures itself by accumulating knowledge and plans, as much as the second attention thrives in a spirit of discovery and open minded uncertainty. 
To accelerate perception, relax the urge to label and to define. While these reactions may temporarily secure our sense of certitude, their hypnotic influence can overwhelm the inner action of seeing.
If basic survival problems remain unsolved -- when security, status and/or territory becomes threatened -- survival anxiety naturally ensues. In an attempt to alleviate this anxiety, the first attention can begin fixating on absolutes as an, albeit unconscious, attempt to restore a sense of security via certitude where no certainty actually exists. In its extreme, an insatiable appetite for certitudes can mask the suffering of frustrated survival/security needs. This dillemna can also drive us crazy by trying to make sense of everything or spin out in a nonstop rant of rationalizations. First attention cannot solve the problems created by the first attention. Attempting to solve problems with the very mechanistic mindset that created them in the first place perpetuates a kind of mobius strip of mental looping. Mad, mad, mad Monkey Mind. 
The mad reign of King Monkey Mind can be overthrown by shifting the focus towards the second attention. The second attention can be cultivated by relaxing the search for meaning. This can be experienced by relaxing the tendency to project, interpret, and/or assume meaning onto whatever is perceived, in lieu of paying more attention to whatever presents itself before our eyes. This shift can be expediated by refusing to label or name or narrate whatever you are perceiving or experiencing. This begins a process of flexing a perceptual muscle that was at one time active and vital before it weakened, corrupted, and/or atrophied. 

REVIEW
To review, the first attention attaches to day-to-day survival concerns, solving everyday mundane problems, and making sense of things by automatically assigning labels and meaning to experience. The second attention links to presence, energy and phenomena, allowing direct engagement with the autonomous forces of creation and even the living archetypes governing existence. As these two attentions recognize each other and find ways to work together, an important bridge develops between them allowing us to traverse freely between worlds.

Intelligence is a word commonly associated for intellect alone and I.Q. (Intellectual Quotient) without regard to numerous other functions of Intelligence beyond, but also inclusive of, intellect. The 8-Circuit Brain model, as first developed by Timothy Leary ("Info-Psychology") and then advanced by Robert Anton Wilson ("Prometheus Rising") and myself ("Angel Tech" and "The Eight-Circuit Brain"), posits eight interacting "brains" or functions of Intelligence that are referred to in this model as "circuits". I have distilled the basic definitions and functions of all eight circuits below, along with a primer of how the upper and lower circuits interact with, and act on, each other. - A.A.

THE FOUR SURVIVAL CIRCUITS

C-1 Physio-Biological Intelligence; the will to survive

C-7 Mytho-Genetic Intelligence of DNA and the Planetary Entity

memories, autonomous archetypes, synchronicity, planetary (Gaia)
mind, cosmic consciousness. The Shocks of Indivisibility and Cosmic
Unity (the absence of dualistic consciousness)
C-8 Quantum-Nonlocal Intelligence of Subatomic interactions

states, the dreambody and dreamtime, lucid dreaming, communion
with The Void, the mystery of singularity. The Shocks of Death and
Impermanence (the absence of ego identification).



THE THREE SUB-PHASES
HOW INTELLIGENCE CAN BE INCREASED
All eight functions of Intelligence can be accessed through any experience allowing their full absorption, integration and transmission. These three sub-phases reflect the tertiary function of our most basic biological unit of intelligence: the neuron. All three sub-stages are necessary for the advancement of intelligence through each circuit. If you only absorb, nothing can be integrated; if nothing can be integrated, whatever we absorb regurgitates and we end up parroting other people's experiences, mass media associations, what we read in books, etc. Each of these eight levels of experience have their own distinct ways that intelligence is processed, ways that do not necessarily apply to other levels. For example, C-2 emotions follows different processes than C-3 ideas.

SHOCKS & ANCHORS
Each of the eight circuits exist within each individual at various degrees of expression and latency. They can be viewed and approached in a linear sequential "evolutionary" way and/or in a nonlinear "radial" way; both vantages work. It would be erroneous to assume any one circuit as "better" or "worse", or "higher" or "lower" than any other. Better to look at them all as symbolizing states of consciousness simultaneously working together in a dynamic changing whole. To view these circuits hierarchically, by positing any circuit as superior or inferior than any other, feeds the emotional plague, what Wile Reich called "a neurosis marked by irrational insistence on beliefs and ideas that depend on a dissociation of mind and body".
There are countless ways these eight functions interact and/or act on each other. My own research has focused on how the first four "survival" circuits and the second four "post-survival" circuits act on each other in very precise, two-way vertical connectivities. I see the upper circuits acting on the lower circuits as distinct shocks that catalyze growth. I see the lower circuits acting on the upper circuits as stabilizing anchors, how we can absorb and integrate the shocks brought about by expanding consciousness.

VERTICAL CONNECTIVITIES
Without a supple and resilient foundation (the integration of circuits 1-4), any significant force of expanded consciousness (from circuits 5-8) can destabilize us in various ways. However, once the survival circuits can be more fully integrated and their intelligence embodied, an inner strength and stability develops to help absorb and integrate upper circuit experiences which can sometimes arrive as shocks, ie., accelerating states of C-5 Ecstasy, C-6 Uncertainty, C-7 Indivisibility, and C-8 Impermanence.
Upper circuit post-survival shocks stimulate growth and development in the four survival circuits, just as the survival circuits (once integrated) can help substantiate and bring into manifestation the accelerated states of energy symbolized by circuits five through eight. If monitored and tended to, all eight circuits can work together in more meaningful ways to serve the larger dynamic and changing whole they are part of. In this way, the 8-Circuit Brain model can offer a safer, more creative guideline to tending the specific verticalities shared between upper circuit shocks and lower circuit anchors (1/5; 2/6; 3/7; 4/8) on the high seas of consciousness research.

Someday, in the not-too-distant future, certain drugs will be made available to the public claiming the effect of increasing intelligence. Given the opportunity to partake, what would you do ? I'd ask the pharmacist: "Just what kind of intelligence is your pill going to increase ?" Like many others schooled in the public education systems, I once naively assumed "intelligence" and "I.Q." to be synonymous with intellect and intellectual achievement alone. Why did we settle for so little ? Any definition of intelligence set in singular, or monotheistic, terms is probably not intelligence at all but a strand of the dismal fundamentalist virus currently gridlocking minds, young and old alike. How "intelligence" is defined probably determines the kind of intelligence produced.
The "Eight Circuit Brain" is a term Dr. Timothy Leary coined, in his 1977 book "EXO-PSYCHOLOGY", for accessing multiple definitions and functions of human intelligence. Dr. Leary did not invent this system, which probably originated in the Sufi Mystery Schools' arcane study of the "law of octaves", but revised it for modern times. Since Leary's translation, three additional versions have surfaced in Robert Anton Wilson's "PROMETHEUS RISING" (1984) and my own, "ANGEL TECH" (1986) and "The EIGHT-CIRCUIT BRAIN" (2009). As a whole-brain model for Intelligence, the Eight Circuit Brain yields an impressive catch of relevant information about how intelligence acts when redefined by the user. Leary's "circuits" symbolize eight interactive states of consciousness and the neurochemical transactions constantly mingling between them. They are presented here not as a heirarchy -- one is no "better" than another -- but as a web of simultaneous transmissions at various degrees of cognition within each person. (Please refer to any combination of the books mentioned earlier for a more comprehensive study).
For the purpose of this article, Leary's eight circuits have been reframed as "trances" or, states of consciousness, to be altered, bent or broken at will. "Break trance, make trance, break trance". Trances can be instigated by engaging any of the many catalysts that excite and maintain each circuit. Some catalysts are pharmaceutical but many are not. Getting stuck inside any one trance, or circuit, happens when you become addicted to one or more of the catalysts. New trances from other circuits can be introduced to shift addicitions, either in their linear sequence or at random. First Circuit security trance can be broken by a Second Circuit emotional trance which, in turn, can be dissipated by a Third Circuit semantic trance. The neuropharmacy of your own brain produces all the effects, even those involving ingested drugs which depend on receptors in your brain to work.
AUTHOR'S DISCLAIMER: I do not condone the use of illegal drugs. For information purposes only certain drugs are identified hereafter as "triggers", or catalysts, for accessing the Eight Circuit Brain. I trust the reader is also aware of the value inherent to self-activation of these states inside the "drug-free" highs of technological, ritualistic, sociological, religious and/or psychotherapeutic methods, as well. Some of the triggers listed below I have experimented with; anonymous and knowledgeable sources were consulted with those I have avoided.

FIRST CIRCUIT: BIOSURVIVAL-SECURITY TRANCE.
Preoccupies itself with physical safety and biological survival. Revolves around basic security needs and the warm, buzzy nodding sensations of infant bliss and being taken care of at the most primary levels of existence: food, shelter and enough sleep. When frustrated or over-emphasized the search for security intensifies, becomes an obsession and finally an addiction. Security Addiction expresses the lowest energy state of all trances. When the needs of this center are fulfilled, one lives with the knowledge of being a "survivor" with some ability to stabilize and secure others. SECURITY CATALYSTS: Food, water, shelter, sleep, maternal lactation, Valium, 3-6 hrs. of television, Prozac, all sedatives, nicotine, most pain-killers, PCP, morphine and heroin. Any drug acting on the breathing mechanism of the brain stem by slowing it down and, by overdose, stopping it entirely. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Survival anxiety. The fear of: dying, of living, of eating (bolemia & anorexia), of chaos and of dirt. Obesity and malnurtrition.

SECOND CIRCUIT: TERRITORIAL-EMOTIONAL TRANCE.
Emotions as territorial signals. The compulsion for self-expression and personal freedom. Churns on the more aggressive emotional needs for dominance (political force), status, and self-esteem. Flight-or-fight reflex producing adrenaline rushes when confronting danger and personal triumph, as well as the depression and anxiety attacks often associated with low self-worth, feelings of helplessness and self-diminshment. When frustrated or over-emphasized, emotions inflate and/or deflate yielding conditions of taking oneself too seriously and/or not seriously enough. Mood swings. Emotional and Sexual Addictions. When emotional needs are satisfied, ego-strength and autonomy develop with some ability to excite, motivate and provoke others. EMOTIONAL CATALYSTS: Alcohol beverages. Amyl nitrate. Temper tantrums. Shouting matches. Military marches. Martial arts. High volume rock'n'roll. Slamdancing. Reichean therapy. Any "drug" relaxing emotional inhibitions or catalyzing catharsis. OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS: Anxiety. Hypertension. Hysteria. Emotional dissipation and debilitation. Emotional numbness and vacancy.

THIRD CIRCUIT: CONCEPTUAL-SEMANTIC TRANCE.
Learning intellectual and linguistic skills for grasping and communicating ideas. Spins off conceptual needs for solving problems, defining terms, making maps, and articulating meaning. The central nervous system buzz of stimulating conversation, thinking, writing, reading and other symbolic and mathematical acts. When over-emphasized, one feels "locked inside one's head" with the angst of conceptual redundancy. Word Trance. Symbolic Addictions. When frustrated, psychological fears of becoming "stupid" or "insane" or "misinformed" or "meaningless" confuse thought processes. As social needs are satisfied, a well-adjusted personality finds "its people" while defining and claiming its unique behavioral and ethical code amidst a society far too complex to always condone them. When hedonic needs are met, a state of charismatic magnetism infuse the personality, as seen with some rock stars, film celebrities and performing artists. The Eight-Circuit Brain, like any psychological grid or map, is incomplete at describing the totality of the territory it symbolizes. Imagine an organ as mysterious and powerful as the human brain having only eight functions of intelligence!? If we enter into diplomatic relations with deceptive forces without recognizing them as such, we will be doomed to repeat history for the last time. Let us be reminded of how the Native Americans traded away valuable land for worthless trinkets and broken promises, or how even today Americans are trading their freedoms for tyranny in the name of security [See _Allies of Humanity: Book Two_ (Summers, 2005) for greater elaboration on the parallels between natives and explorers of our own history and what we will soon face]. If it has happened before, what prevents it from happening again? Nothing except the awareness to choose differently. To preempt this possibility, we must know our priorities and develop a keen understanding of the differences between positive forces and negative impostors.

"Truth." That was Sadashiv's answer to, "What does your show offer?"

He is one of KVMR's original founders with 22 years involvement. His list of musicians, philosophers and writers who have impacted him yields a list as

eclectic as Sadashiv himself: Buddha, Karmapa, Babaji, Yogananda, Wavy Gravy, plus The Founding Fathers.

But does Ben & Jerry have an ice cream flavor called Buddha? Or The Founding Fathers? Obviously Sadashiv knows something B&J have missed. He compendiously elaborates on what inspired him to do the show: "Life, and passion for it."

But wait, there's more (also succinct)! By his own biographical reckoning: "I'm here, and I'm very alive. I've been on this planet almost 60 years. I've traveled, been an actor (on- and off-stage), conferred with gurus, and been ne. I'm an artist and a rebel and always will be. I have no bosses and never will have."

He may have overstated that "no bosses" thing. By his own admission he labors under one of the most brutal, unwavering task-masters ever known: "Truth."

"But," he says, "Truth is, it doesn't toss me, it is me."
