http://100tpc.org/     }Do you want to join other poets, musicians, and artists around the world in a demonstration/celebration to promote peace, sustainability and justice..: and to call for serious social, environmental and political change?  Sept. 24th, 2016 is the next Global Event Day! 100 Thousand Poets for Change will help organize by local region, city, or state, and find individuals in each area who would like to organize their local event. If you are an organizer for your community this means that first you will consider a location for the event and begin to contact people in your area who want to participate in the event. Participation means contacting the media, posting the event on the web, in calendars, newspapers, etc., reading poems, doing a concert, performing in general, supplying cupcakes and beer (it’s up to you), demonstrating, putting up an information table, inviting guest speakers, musicians, etc., organizing an art exhibit, and documenting the event (this is important, too), and cleaning up, of course. Organizers and participants will create their own local event as an expression of who they are locally. Do they want a a concert or a jam session, candlelight vigil or a circus, a march or a dance, poetry reading in a cafe or on the subway, do they want absolute silence, a group meditation on a main street; it’s up to the local organization. To  search for 100TPC events by country/city go to the 100 thousand poets for change blog.  Find all global event locations, get updates, current news, and connect with organizers worldwide on the100tpc blog!

http://www.diaart.org/contents/page/info/102   }Dia was founded in New York City in 1974 by Philippa de Menil, Heiner Friedrich, and Helen Winkler to help artists achieve visionary projects that might not otherwise be realized because of scale or scope. To suggest the institution’s role in enabling such ambitions, they selected the name “Dia,” taken from the Greek word meaning “through.” Today, Dia is a constellation of sites, from the iconic permanent, site-specific artworks and installations in New York, the American West and Germany; to an exhibition program that has commissioned dozens of breakthrough projects; to the vast galleries of Dia:Beacon; and finally the programs of education and public engagement. Dia Art Foundation identifies, fosters, and presents those artists who have the potential to change the way we think about art and the world. Dia:Chelsea - Dia currently presents an ongoing series of Artist on Artist lectures and Readings in Contemporary Poetry at 535 West 22nd Street in New York City. Dia:Beacon - In May 2003, Dia Art Foundation opened Dia:Beacon on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, New York, in a former Nabisco box printing factory. The museum presents Dia’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as special exhibitions, new commissions, and public programs.

Kennedy's search for theatre space in which to show the results of The Archives Group grant project—interviews with hundreds of poets in this region, shaped into a film tale of the history of Sacramento poetry. The film must be shown to the public, under the terms of their Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Council grant, but so far Bari's (and co-producer Linda Thorell's) efforts to find suitable space within the county have been fruitless. Any ideas? Recently, R.E. Graswich, columnist for the Metro section of The Sacramento Bee, mentioned B.L. Kennedy's search for a theater in which to show the poetry documentary produced by The Archives Group. Today's column lists all sorts of responses that Graswich got; hopefully one of these will pan out. Thanks to Graswich for trying, at least, thereby supporting local poetry. This will be the only 2006 showing of I Began To Speak, produced, written and directed by B.L. Kennedy; Director of Photography, Editing and Design was Linda Thorell. http://www.poetspath.com/transmissions/      }Confucious, in a statement noted by Ezra Pound and later Gary Snyder, wrote: "In hewing an axe-handle, how do you proceed? Without [another] axe it cannot be done." Thus it is with poets and poetry––the model is in your hands, not far off. The art of poetry is the subject of MAP's Legacy Transmissions and Postbeat Poets Activist Scholarship pages.
http://www.poetspath.com/Scholarship_Project/index.html       }In a 1966 interview with Robert Shelton, Bob Dylan said, "What I mean by 'holy' is crossing the boundaries of time and usefulness... Allen Ginsberg, he's just holy." Statements such as this mark the beginnings of the Postbeat period–a time when the reverberations of the Beat Generation were being reshaped and expanded upon by poets influenced by the works of the Beats in general and Ginberg in particular. The documents included here ascribe to the notion of the Scholar-Activist put forward by Postbeat poet Edward Sanders––a concept that occurred to him while reading Matthew Arnold's "The Scholar-Gypsy." The Scholar-Activist, wrote Sanders in a 2007 talk entitled "Writing, Social Change, and Revolution," has an undifferentiated calling for "private research and public action." The significance of the Postbeat Poets Activist Scholarship, in any period, is to illuminate poetic calling as it is now.

http://blog.pshares.org/index.php/literary-boroughs-51-sacramento-ca/      }The Literary Boroughs series will explore little-known and well-known literary communities across the country and world and show that while literary culture can exist online without regard to geographic location, it also continues to thrive locally. Posts are by no means exhaustive and we encourage our readers to contribute in the comment section. The series will run on our blog from May 2012 until AWP13 in Boston. Please enjoy the fifty-first post on Sacramento, California, by Tim Kahl. —Andrea Martucci, Ploughshares Managing Editor..  Sacramento is the “land of big water” as the Miwok referred to it, but it is most well known as The Capital City and the site where the Gold Rush madness began. It is the seat of state government of California. It is the birthplace of  Tower Records and Cake. It is affectionately known as the “River City” (a distinction it shares with Grand Junction, CO; Mason City, IA; Decatur City, AL, Louisville, KY; etc.), the “City of Trees” (a distinction it shares with Paris and Amsterdam), the “Big Tomato” and the “Camellia City.” It was named by the Civil Rights Project of Harvard University as the most racially/ethnically integrated major city in America. Recently it was named the Farm-to-Fork Capital of America for its abundance of locally-grown produce. Other local luminaries include: Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, actor Sam Elliott, actress Adrienne Barbeau, businessman Charles Schwab, musician Jackie Greene, Lee Greenwood and jazz legend Jimmy Smith. Sacramento’s literary scene puts as much emphasis on how words enter public space as part of the oral tradition as it does on words impressed onto the printed page.

Squirl works by first inviting authors to post locations from their books. “We developed the app because we think too many great books remain undiscovered,” Van der Avoort says, noting that the app is geared mostly toward independent and emerging authors who need help getting the word out about their books.

http://www.uapress.ua.edu/product/Upper-Limit-Music,807.aspx     }Upper Limit Music, The Writing of Louis Zukofsky, Edited by Mark Scroggins.   Scroggins provides a provocative and advanced introduction to the thought and writing of Louis Zukofsky, aptly described as one of the "first postmodernists." Poet, translator, and editor, Louis Zukofsky was born in New York City in 1904. Raised to speak first Yiddish and then English, he was fascinated by language from an early age. This deep preoccupation with language--its musicality, complex constructions, and fluid meaning--later became a key component in the development of his poetry. Friend to William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and Ezra Pound, mentor to Robert Creeley and influence
on many of the Language Movement poets, Zukofsky and his work stand squarely at the center of American poetry's transition from modernism to postmodernism.
http://www.ubu.com/aspen/      }This is a web version of Aspen, a multimedia magazine of the arts published by Phyllis Johnson from 1965 to 1971. Each issue came in a customized box filled with booklets, phonograph recordings, posters, postcards — one issue even included a spool of Super-8 movie film. It's all here.  Aspen was conceived by Phyllis Johnson, a former editor for Women's Wear Daily and Advertising Age. While wintering in Aspen, Colorado, she got the idea for a multimedia magazine, designed by artists, that would showcase “culture along with play.” So in the winter of 1965, she published her first issue. “We wanted to get away from the bound magazine format, which is really quite restrictive,” said Johnson. Each issue had a new designer and editor. “Aspen,” Johnson said, “should be a time capsule of a certain period, point of view,
or person.” The subject matter of issue number 1 and issue number 2 stayed close to the magazine's namesake ski spa, with features on Aspen's film and music festivals, skiing, mountain wildlife, and local architecture. Andy Warhol and David Dalton broke that mold with issue number 3, the superb Pop Art issue, devoted to New York art and counterculture scenes.

However, because the name The Fessenden Review was constantly being misspelled, and because we spent altogether too much time explaining the source of the name (Reginald A. Fessenden was an obscure radio pioneer out of turn-of-the-century Canada) we have chosen to rechristen the magazine as The Review of Arts, Literature, Politics, and the Humanities, or, more succinctly, if not more vulgarly, RALPH. We are especially taken with this nickname --- a fine, tacky phrase out of the 50s. To ralph means, in medical terminology, to toss one's cookies. If we were to say that the magazine should have its readers doing just that, it might be self-serving, if not inaccurate. But we like the hint of vulgarity being brought to the otherwise sententious world of publishing, letters, poetry, literature, literary arts, and artistic reviews. RALPH has two Tables of Contents floating around in hyperspace at this time. There's the Modest TOC and then there's the Gargantuan TOC. Both include all our listings and all our issues from 1994 to the present. The Modest TOC is the more colorful (and modest) one, but it's a house with many rooms. It lists all of the books reviewed --- plus articles, readings, and poems --- in your standard table format.

These poems were originally available to the general public via a special telephone number from the The Architectural League of New York. However due to some of the adult content contained in certain pieces the project was threatened with lawsuitÕs from concerned, conservative parents and the telephone number was eventually disconnected. John Giorno then turned to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as a venue for his collaborative project. However the radical political content of many of the works caused a great deal of concern and despite strong support from the then current director, the show was eventually pulled. The show then moved to a number of different venues and many of the poems have since been published as an audio recording. Poems heard on this program include works by John Cage, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Emmett Williams, Ed Sanders, Taylor Mead, Jim Carroll, Aram Saroyan, Anne Waldman, Bobby Seale, and many others.

FZ: Hiya. How you doin' tonight? Alright, um, as you know, I'm not the kind of a person that reads books, I've said this before many times, I'm not fond of reading. But, I do, I have in the past made exceptions, and uh, one of these exceptions was this part of the, the book that, I'm sure you know, called Naked Lunch, and I've received permission to read the part about the talking asshole. So . . . Before I do, uh, I've discussed with Mr. Burroughs before we came out here some of the details that led to the construction of this section of the book. I asked him where he got the idea for this part, and he said that it was derived from the ventriloquist scene in The Dead Of Night, if you know that film. And I had a little bit of trouble following that, for a moment there, until he made it all very clear to me by saying that uh, it was like uh, when you have a ventriloquist dummy and suddenly the dummy starts talking for you. And so, with that introduction, I start on page 132, and it goes like this (ahem.)

We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves.   -- Big Brother, anxiously awaiting your arrival in room 101.

The mantra is from the kagyu Milarepa ritual. Milarepa - His Teachings Milarepa Karma and Samsara. (following on from 'the fleeting bubbles') -"This is indeed very helpful to my mind," commented the physician, "but please preach still further for me on the truth of Karma and the suffering of birth, old age, illness and death, thus enabling me to gain a deeper conviction in Buddhadharma." In response, Jetsun sang a song -
.
Please listen to these words,
Dear friends here assembled.
When you are young and vigorous
You ne'er think of old age coming,
But it approaches slow and sure
Like a seed growing underground.
When you are strong and healthy
You ne'er think of sickness coming,
But it descends with sudden force
Like a stroke of lightning.
When involved in worldly things
You ne'er think of death's approach.
Quick it comes like thunder
Crashing round your head.
Sickness, old age and death
Ever meet each other
As do hands and mouth.
Waiting for his prey in ambush,
Yama is ready for his victim,
When disaster catches him.
Sparrows fly in single file. Like them,
Life, Death and Bardo follow one another.
Never apart from you
Are these three 'visitors'.
Thus thinking, fear you not
Your sinful deeds?
Like strong arrows in ambush waiting,
Rebirth in Hell, as Hungry Ghost, or Beast
Is (the destiny) waiting to catch you.
If once into their traps you fall,
Hard will you find it to escape.
Do you not fear the miseries
You experienced in the past?
Surely you will feel much pain
If misfortunes attack you?
The woes of life succeed one another
Like the sea's incessant waves -
One has barely passed, before
The next one takes its place.
Until you are liberated, pain
and pleasure come and go at random
Like passers-by encountered in the street.
Pleasures are precarious,
Like bathing in the sun;
Transient, too, as snowstorms
Which come without warning.
Remembering these things,
Why not practise the Dharma?

"But Rumi did not begin his career as a mystic, or as a poet. Author Brad Gooch, who is writing a biography of Rumi, describes him as “a traditional Muslim preacher and scholar, as his father and grandfather had been.” That is until age 37, when in 1244, he met a mystic called Shams of Tabriz. “The two of them have this electric friendship for three years—lover and beloved [or] disciple and sheikh, it’s never clear,” says Gooch. After Shams’ death, possibly by murder, Rumi began writing poetry. “Most of the poetry we have comes from age 37 to 67. He wrote 3,000 [love songs] to Shams, the prophet Muhammad and God.” Note: if some of the video or audio files are missing from this page, you can watch this link:

"My main focus here is on videopoetry, “a genre of poetry displayed on a screen, distinguished by its time-based, poetic juxtaposition of text with images and sound,” as videopoetry pioneer Tom Konyves puts it. Other names for this genre  or examples of closely related genres, depending on one’s perspective,  include filmpoetry, poetry-film and cinepoetry, and animated poems form an important subset. I am especially interested in videopoems created by the poet him- or herself, which can often take ekphrastic form (Hey, I’ve got some cool footage, let’s see if there’s a poem in it!), and which grade into active collaborations between poet and filmmaker. I do also post other kinds of poetry videos, too, including poetry readings, spoken word performances, documentaries, poetry dance videos, concert performances of poems set to music, and the occasional interview with a poet. See the directory for a complete listing of poets, nationalities, and filmmakers. “

http://www.ubu.com/vp/   }Ubu Web Visual Poetry. UbuWeb began as an online repository for concrete and visual poetry scanned from aging anthologies and re-imagined as back-lit transmissions from a potential future. As the archive has progressed, the concentration on visual poetry has waned in favour of an reconnoitering of diverse avant-gardes. UbuWeb's Visual Poetry section exposes little-seen exemplars of historical praxis and models of contemporary insight to a wider audience. This section includes anthologies, ephemeral publications, criticism and sporadic journals dedicated to visual poetry. Due to the elusive and ephemeral nature of concrete and visual poetry publications, there is a perceived lack of innovation in the genre. Without exposure to radical practice, artistic precedent and innovative models, concrete poets too often fall back upon familiar tropes and unchallenging forms.
